WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — George Francis Sarrouf, 73, of 213 Sand Springs Road died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Sweet Brook Care Centers. He was a former member of the Planning Board and a was the town's civil defense director.
Born in North Adams on April 2, 1936, son of Toffie and Leza Sarrouf, he attended North Adams schools including Drury High School, where he played the trombone in the marching and dance bands. He graduated from Wilbraham Academy and received an associate's degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology. He later received his bachelor's degree in physics and master's in education from North Adams State College.
Mr. Sarrouf taught physics and mathematics at McCann Technical School for 26 years. He first worked at IB Moore Rubber in Boston as a machine tool designer for about five years and at the former Hunter Machine and Sprague Electric companies in North Adams as a draftsman. He also worked for Union Carbide as quality control process engineer and taught automotive design at Melrose High School, physics and math at Southern Vermont College and industrial arts at Mount Greylock Regional High School.
He was a communicant of Sts. Patrick & Raphael Church. George was a major in the Civil Air Patrol and a squadron commander of the Harriman & West Airport Composite Squadron. He directed personnel on many search-and-rescue missions of downed aircraft in the area and was an assistant airport manager. He was treasurer of the Christmas Brook Figure Skating Club and a past board member of the North Adams Historical Society.
He and his wife, the former Marcia A. Gamari, were married Aug. 14, 1965, in the former St. Anthony of Padua Church in North Adams.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael G. Sarrouf and his wife, Lenora, of North Adams; a daughter, Julie A. Yale and her husband, David, of Bethel, Conn.; a brother, Camille F. Sarrouf of Belmont, a granddaughter, Emma Jane Yale, and nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Sarrouf will be celebrated Thursday, Nov. 5, at 11 from St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.
Calling hours will be Thursday morning from 9 to 10:30 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital or St. Patrick's Food Pantry in care of the funeral home.

I am very sadden to hear about the loss of your husband and father. Mr. Sarrouf always could put a smile on your face. He was always there for his students, never turning his back!! I was lucky to have had both you and your husband as my teachers and both of you left an impact on my life. Mr. Sarrouf loved his job, but most of all he cared and loved all those he taught.

Berkshire County has lost another great man. One of my fondest and funniest memories of Mr. Sarrouf was when I was sitting in class and Mr. Sarrouf was once again trying to get a point across about...well something, and as always we just weren't paying attention as well. So... he decides to throw chalk clear across the room at us. It certainly got our attention and to this day I smile just thinking about it. I will never forget him and all our special talks we had together. He was one of my favorites.

My deepest Sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. S. He was such a wonderful teacher. My favorite memory of him is when he would turn on that machine, a big ball looking thing and make students hair stand up when they touched it. What a great man and teacher. Condolences and all my best to Mr. Sarrouf's family and friends; I was surprised and saddened when I read the news. He was truly one of the nicest and best teachers McCann had while I was there. Once in awhile I'd hang out and talk to him in the physics/chemistry room and he always was good to talk to.

I was so sad to hear of Mr. Sarrouf's passing. I remember him fondly from my days at McCann. While I never had him for a teacher, he was always so nice and easy to talk to. And of course you were one of my favorite teachers! I dont doubt that both of you served as great inspirations to your students.
