Driver Injured When Truck Hits North Adams Building

Staff ReportsiBerkshires
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The driver of a pickup truck was taken to North Adams Regional Hospital on Monday night after the truck he was driving smashed into a building.

The driver was able to exit the damaged late-model red Toyota Tacoma with the aid of firefighters and North Adams Ambulance personnel. There were no passengers. The name of the driver was not immediately available.

The accident was called in at about 9:30 p.m. as a "car into a building." The truck was coming down steep Liberty Street toward Houghton when it apparently failed to negotiate a righthand turn and hit the corner of the building across the street and slightly to the north.

Eyewitnesses who were in their living room at the time told police they heard the crash and looked out to see the truck going backwards. They attempted to encourage the driver to get out of the vehicle but said he seemed disoriented and asked for a push and tried to start the truck. They moved back when they saw what they believed to be gasoline leaking.

The commercial building exhibited little damage to its siding and concrete foundation. Pieces of the front end of the truck, however, were scattered around the scene. The vehicle went backwards, where it came to rest partly on the north sidewalk of Liberty and a foot or so away from a utility pole and another building on the passenger's side.

The street was closed to traffic below North Street and the accident was being investigated.

The front end of the Tacoma was severely damaged by the crash and the truck was towed away by Dean's Quality Auto.

Pittsfield Man Pleads Guilty To Gun Charges In Wellington Ave Shooting

Staff Reports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city man who was arrested in the killing of a 23-year-old man last December pleaded guilty Monday to weapons charges.

Kurt Hudson, 26, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to single counts of illegal possession of a firearm, rifle or shotgun and possession of a firearm, rifle or shotgun with a prior conviction for a violent crime or serious drug offense.

He was sentenced by Judge John Agostini to three to four years at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction on the possession with a prior conviction charge and given concurrent two and a half to three year on the illegal possession charge.

Hudson was initially accused of murdering 23-year-old Nikolas S. Carnute on December 5, 2011 but a Grand Jury later found that he had acted in self-defense. A homicide charge was dropped because the jury found no probable cause but Hudson then faced weapons charges.

According to reports at the time, the Grand Jury found that Carnute had drawn a gun on Hudson while Hudson sat in a parked car. While backing out of the Wellington Avenue driveway, Hudson fired two shots out of the car window, the Grand Jury concluded. One of those shots hit Carnute in the head.

Hudson then fled to Columbia, S.C. where he was arrested three days after the shooting.

The cement truck caught on fire and filled the Cheshire Road area just north of Allendale Shopping Center with smoke.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A cement truck burst into flames on Cheshire Road on Tuesday morning filling the street with smoke.

Geoff Gladu was visiting his brother's home when he said he saw a "big blast of fire" coming from the cement truck at about 10 a.m. He capture the flames and the smoke on film.

Gladu said it appeared that the smoke caused a minor collision as well between two cars. Both of those vehicles drove away from the scene, Gladu said.

The fire appeared to have gone out on its own. Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and by about 10:30 a.m., the Fire Department had left the scene.

It does not appear that there were any injuries.
