Man Who Surfed Biggest Wave Has Pittsfield Connection

By Andy McKeeveriBerkshires Staff
Off the coast of Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, recently, professional surfer Garrett McNamara set a world record by surfing the largest wave ever.

Can you guess where McNamara was born? Right here in Pittsfield, Mass.

He only spent his first 18 months here and the city is about 120 miles from an ocean, so it is safe to say that he didn't get his surfing talent from us. But, hey, we can try to take credit for it.

His website does credit Pittsfield as being the home for his earliest "daredevil feats" when he "launched himself of out his booster seat" at 11 months old.

And now he's off setting world records and riding 90-feet-tall waves. They grow up so fast!

It may be a stretch to write about it on our hyper-local websites but those 18 months have given us enough of an excuse to post this awesome video from ESPN. Enjoy.
