Pedestrian Killed By Cargo Train In Pittsfield

Police are mum on details but confirmed that an unidentified man was struck by what looked to be a two-car cargo train. It appears that the man was walking along the tracks around 7 p.m. when he was struck by the westbound train.
As of midnight, Depot Street was closed to through traffic while investigators were on the scene.

Pittsfield Police: Robbery Related to Elm St. Incidents

The suspect is a short, thin, white female who was wearing a black jacket with fur around the hood, black-hooded sweat shirt, black mask, black gloves and black pants. She carried a small black handbag and displayed a small handgun.
The suspect's vehicle was described as a slate blue smaller sport utility vehicle.
Police believe the suspect is the same person responsible for the recent Elm Street armed robberies and that she may be changing vehicles for each incident.

Superior Court Briefs: February 22 - February 23

Alonzo Wright, 38, of Lenox pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of suboxone, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and conspiracy to violate drug laws.
Wright was released on personal recognizance pending sentencing on Feb. 29. Wright was in possession of the drugs with the intent to sell when he was arrested on April 15, 2010. He conspired with others to sell marijuana between December 22, 2009 and April 15, 2010.
Ashley Watts, 22, of North Adams pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of alprazolam with intent to distribute, possession of naloxone and buprenorphine with intent to distribute, possession of diazapam with intent to distribute and six counts of conspiracy to violate drug laws.
She was given 18 month suspended sentences at the Berkshire County House of Correction on the oxycodone and one count of conspiracy and placed on two years probation on the remaining charges.
The charges stem from the execution of a search warrant at 613 Ashland Street on March 11, 2009.
Michael Bailey Jr., 22, of Pittsfield had not guilty pleas entered on his behalf on single counts of distribution of cocaine, distribution of marijuana and conspiracy to violate drug laws.
Bailey was ordered to be held at the Berkshire County House of Correction on $5,000 bail. Bailey allegedly sold cocaine and marijuana and conspired with others to sell marijuana in Pittsfield on December 1, 2011.
Michael Cooper, 35, of Pittsfield had not guilty pleas entered on his behalf on two counts of distribution of cocaine - his second offense.
Cooper was ordered to be held at the Berkshire County House of Correction on $10,000 bail. The charges stem from cocaine sales in Pittsfield on December 2, 2011 and December 20, 2011.
Cases heard before Judge John Agostini on Thursday, February 23.
James Kerr, 22, of Pittsfield had not guilty pleas entered on his behalf on two counts of breaking and entering in the daytime, two counts of malicious destruction of personal property, two counts of larceny in a building and single counts of receiving stolen property and common and notorious thief.
Kerr was ordered to be held at the Berkshire County House of Correction on $2,500 cash or $25,000 surety bail. Kerr allegedly broke in to houses in Richmond, Dalton and Pittsfield between October 21, 2010 and January 30, 2012.
Ryan Sullivan, 23, of Hinsdale had not guilty pleas entered on his behalf on seven counts of larceny in a building, six counts of breaking and entering, four counts of forgery of a check, four counts of uttering a false check, four counts of identity fraud, three counts of larceny over $250, two counts of malicious destruction of property, two counts of vandalize property and single counts of breaking and entering placing a person in fear, larceny under $250, larceny of a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, larceny of a controlled substance and common and notorious thief.
Sullivan was ordered to be held at the Berkshire County House of Correction on $500 bail. Sullivan allegedly broke in to houses in Richmond, Hinsdale, Washington, Dalton, Peru and Pittsfield between April 13, 2011 and November 5, 2011.
Bianchi Calls On Residents To End Elm St. Robberies

Bianchi issued a statement Thursday afternoon calling the string of robberies on Elm Street "concerning and completely unacceptable." He is calling on residents to contact the Police Department if they had seen or heard something that may be helpful in solving the crime.
"I'm confident that someone has information that can lead to the arrest of this criminal," the statement reads. "Any information provided to the police will be handled anonymously, if that is your choice. Do not ever think you are bothering the police. As I said during my campaign, I want Pittsfield to become the most unwelcoming city for criminals. It will only happen with your involvement."
The mayor said that police have successfully apprehended criminals responsible for a variety of robberies and break-ins that have escalated over the last year or so, "it's just a matter of time before police find this latest armed robber on Elm Street."
Bianchi added, "But I strongly believe that more eyes and ears will enable police to gather information that can lead to quicker arrests. Criminals will go elsewhere when they realize that Pittsfield citizens won’t tolerate criminal activity, and we’re all working together to stop it. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own community."

Working with Police to launch new neighborhood watch groups is a priority for the Bianchi administration, the statement said. The mayor's staff is working to organize information and resources that will be made available to all groups. By early spring, several new groups will be ready to launch with police kicking off introductory meetings.
"At the heart of Neighborhood Watch is the belief that all of us can help ensure the safety and wellbeing of our family, friends and neighbors by speaking up when we see or hear something that seems troubling," Bianchi said. "We don’t need a formal Neighborhood Watch group to do that. It's part of our responsibility as members of this community."
Pittsfield Police Investigating Elm Street Robberies

According to Police, within the last three weeks, Angelina's Sub Shop, Getty Gas Station and Palmer's Variety were all robbed.
The suspect is a short, thin, white female wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black ski mask, black gloves and black pants. She carries a small black handbag and displays a small handgun. She may be driving a dark or olive green sport utility vehicle.

There was a similar outbreak of armed robberies on Elm Street just last November. On Nov. 21, a masked person tried to enter the Lipton Mobile Mart. That suspect was wearing a gray ski mask, a gray pullover shirt and dark pants. The video showed the suspect holding a bag and brandishing some type of weapon.
A few days later a man and a woman were arrested and linked to that robbery, and others, after another armed robbery at Dominos Pizza, also on Elm Street.
