Telemarketer Signs Lease On Historic Pittsfield Building

Staff ReportsiBerkshires

Updated: April 9, 2013 at 1:27 with information from Premium Marketing Enterprises founder Mike Eitelberg.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A business-to-business telemarketing company is leasing the historic Wollison-Shipton building on North Street and bringing at least a half-dozen new jobs.

Premium Marketing Enterprises Corp. signed a least last week to occupy office space in the 125-year-old building. The company, established in 1998, connects businesses in the technical, software and insurance fields by generating leads. The company already works with agencies such as Travelers Insurance and Nationwide.

"It's direct contact marketing. We're not calling people at their home. We're connecting business to business," founder Mike Eitelberg said on Tuesday.

The company was formerly headquartered in Kingston, N.Y., but Eitelberg recently moved to the Berkshires full time and is bringing the business with him. There will still be a presence in Kingston but "we're leaning more with an emphasis on Pittsfield."

With a new office that can fit 12 employees, the company has already hired four people to staff its North Street location and is looking to bring on a few more in the next few months. Eitelberg said he seeing the business growing as it delves more into the technical fields.

Eitelberg said the jobs are "median" income in a "professional work environment" with the opportunity for upward momentum.

"It is significantly above the minimum wage job around here," he said.

He chose Pittsfield in part because the office space, which is being leased by Financial Firebird Corp., has controlled costs and the city has the potential work force he needs to grow the company. The city offers a lower "cost of doing business" with the rental space.

Eitelberg said the company opened a small office in the building initially just to get a few workers in and on Friday, they will be moving into the larger space.

The Shipton building was opened in 1888.

Greylock, Williams Credit Unions Merge

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Greylock Federal Credit Union and Williams College Employees Federal Credit Union have merged the two institutions effective April 1.

Both organizations and the National Credit Union Administration have approved the merger.

WCEFCU Board Chairman Peter LePage said the move is a result of the credit union's desire to give their members more benefits.

"In the current financial environment, it's been challenging to achieve the financial position and growth needed to provide the products and services our members want and need," he said in a statement. "The decision to merge is in the best interest of our Members."

The college employee credit union's $1,625,529 in assets will be assumed by Greylock. The credit union has maintained a membership base of 541 people with $1.6 million in loans and $488,000 in deposits. Approximately one-third of these members already belong to Greylock.

The college credit union opened in 1980 and has been managed by two part-time employees. Its members will now have access to all services provided by Greylock, which has more than 70,000 members.

Toyota Honors K-M Motors for 50-Year Partnership

Derek Dubie, left, Dennis Dubie, Cooper Erickson and Nancy Kolac pose with the trophy for the 50-year partnership between Toyota and K-M Motors.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A lot has changed in the last 50 years, but K-M Motors' relationship with Toyota hasn't.

For that, Toyota Regional General Manager Cooper Erickson awarded the shop with a glass trophy during a brief ceremony Thursday morning at K-M Motors' Curran Highway showroom.

"It's been a great relationship, a great product," said Dennis Dubie, owner of K-M Motors. "The relationship of Toyota and K-M has been fantastic."

Erickson credited K-M Motors, the second oldest Toyota dealership in New England, with taking the risk with Toyota, and then following through with daily operations.

"What made Toyota great was entrepeneurs who wanted to take a chance [with Toyota]," Erickson said. "Toyota was no sure thing in 1963."

Mayor Richard Alcombright also spoke highly of the store, noting its "tremendous customer service" and great location at the "busiest corridor" in the city.

Erickson also recognized office manager Nancy Kolac, who has been working at K-M Motors for those 50 years. She was awarded a gift certificate to Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox.

Kolac said the dealership changed a lot since she began working there in 1963. Throughout the earlier years, she worked with a lot of her family — including her father Henry Kolac, the founder of K-M Motors. Since then, the rest of the family moved on.

Nancy Kolac received a gift certificate to Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in recognition of her 50 years on the staff.

Kolac said some things are still the same. Her appreciation of customers, who she considers more as friends than customers, as well as the challenges the store and those friends face.

"It's almost like you had the same struggle as back then with the economy," Kolac said.

Dubie said K-M Motors is the only new-car retailer in North Adams, believing the waves of recessions have left them the last standing. He said that designation is special, but feels empathetic toward other owners who discontinued service because of the difficult times in the industry.

Henry Kolac first opened K-M Motors, formerly known as Nash North Adams, in 1945. The store was later renamed to K-M Motors after taking a different franchise.

Dubie joined K-M Motors in 1980, partnering with Henry Kolac. After Kolac's death in 1991, Dubie took sole ownership. His son Derek Dubie is the general manager of the shop.

K-M Motors has two locations. The offices at 51 West Main St. does sales, service, body work and sells parts. The 1300 Curran Highway location has the showroom.

Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield Being Sold at Auction

Staff ReportsiBerkshires

The building at 433 North St. is being auctioned off in April.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Ferrin Gallery building at 433-439 North St. will be auctioned off at foreclosure on Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m.

Gallery has reportedly closed and moved to Cummington.

The gallery operated by Leslie Ferrin opened on North Street in 2007, after five years in Lenox, with much fanfare as a symbol of the city's resurgence through the creative economy.

Ferrin and business partner Donald Clark put the building on the market in early 2011 for $350,000, but she told The Berkshire Eagle on Wednesday that there have been no offers and the building was no longer "an effective use of our funds."

Back in 2011, in an interview with BerkshireFineArts.com, Ferrin said the gallery was no longer a central aspect for her business, saying "The biggest reason is that the business is growing in a different direction: Expanded partnerships, art fairs, and managing the artists' careers that are growing internationally."

The North Street building includes two commercial/condominium spaces on the first floor (Units 102 and 103), one of which was occupied by Ferrin Gallery, and 15 other units. The gallery was the only tenant in the buiding. The property was listed as "The 433 North Condominium Complex."

The mortgage holder is People's United Bank and Aaron Posnik Auctioneers will manage the auction.
