North Adams - They want folks to see how they do it.

Charles H. McCann Technical School students have established a tradition of high achievement and recognition during yearly SkillsUSA competitive events. And earlier this year, a number of high school and post-secondary students excelled during Business Professionals of America competitions. Hands-on student community service contributions have benefited such projects as city trolley bus repairs and a Silvio O. Conte Middle School garden.

The school's curriculum includes "Project Lead the Way," a challenging and unique pre-engineering program. School officials long ago cast aside any notions of gender-biased program inclusion; male and female students are welcome to seek entry into any one of the school's nine high school career-based curriculums. Most programs include male and female students.

"Showcase To Success"

The public is invited to take a first-hand look at the school's classrooms, technical work arenas, and its' students during an Oct. 26 "Showcase To Success" exposition scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hodges Cross Road school.

The two-hour expo is designed as a venue with a focus on "McCann Tech students at work, highlighting programs and technology in education," according to information provided by school administrators.

Expo guests may participate during school tours, taste student-prepared foods, view classroom and technical space demonstrations, and speak with teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators about the school. Raffles and giveaways will be included during the evening.

The school is governed by the Northern Berkshire Vocational Regional School District; James Brosnan is the district superintendent. Gary Rivers is the school principal.

Curriculums

McCann academic programs include an English language arts program that offers honors literature and writing courses and Spanish language classes, a mathematics program that includes honors algebra I and II, honors geometry, trigonometry and pre-calculus classes, Science courses that include biology, chemistry, technology and engineering, physics, anatomy and physiology, and world and U.S. history studies.

High school technical curriculums are automotive technology, carpentry, computer assisted drafting, culinary arts, electricity, information technology, machine and plastic technology, metal fabrication, office technology, and the "Project Lead the Way" program.

High school students tackle both academic and technical curriculums while enrolled at the school. A student cooperative employment program is active at the school.

Post-secondary programs include practical nursing, cosmetology, dental assisting, medical assisting, and surgical technology.

The school hosts a high school athletic program as well as extra-curricular activities including a student activities club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Ski Club, Yearbook Committee, peer mediation and National Honor Society eligibility.
