Boys Of The Lough At The Clark

12:00AM / Monday, February 19, 2007

Williamstown - The lively sounds of Celtic music will fill the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute's auditorium with a concert by Boys of the Lough on Sat., March 3.

Enjoy the technical brilliance and integrity of Boys of the Lough's performance of Irish and Scottish music as it combines with a ready wit and sense of fun to enliven their onstage performance.

Their original arrangements and dynamic interactions between the two major strands of the Celtic are always bright and fresh earning them a unique position of respect in the world of traditional music. The concert will be held at 8 pm; tickets are $24 ($20 for members) and may be reserved by calling 413-458-0524 or purchased at the museum shop.

In December 2006, the Boys of the Lough performed on National Public Radio's "Prairie Home Companion." Enormously popular and well-respected, The Boston Globe called them "...musically splendid...legends."

The music of Boys of the Lough ranges widely through the instrumental and vocal traditions of Ireland, Scotland, Shetland and North America. Although sometimes melodically complex and difficult to play, the music remains at all times easily accessible to the listener through the compelling dance rhythms that give it such life. Contrast this with evocative slow airs and beautifully structured songs, some in the Irish language, add the range of tone colors available from the band's acoustic instruments, and it is easy to understand the great appeal of their lively performances.

The Celtic supergroup features All-Ireland champion Cathal McConnell on flute, whistles and vocals; Dave Richardson on concertina, mandolin, button accordion and cittern; Brendan Begley on button accordion, melodeon, and vocals; Malcolm Stitt on guitar, bouzouki and Highland pipe; and Fiddler of the Year Kevin Henderson on fiddle.

The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm (daily in July and August). Admission is free November through May. Admission June 1 through October 31 is $12.50 for adults, free for children 18 and younger, members, and students with valid ID. For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu.
