BMC Offers Safe Driver Program For Older Drivers

01:30PM / Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Pittsfield- In an effort to reduce automobile accidents and help seniors in the community drive more safely, Berkshire Medical Center will host an AARP Safe Drivers program on July 11 and 12.

The two-day program is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Berkshire Medical Center’s private dining room A, adjacent to the BMC Café. The program is focused on the needs and concerns of drivers who are 50 years of age and over.

Lunch will be provided to those registered for the program.

The program stresses the physical changes accompanying aging and how to compensate for them. Open to the public, the course is conducted through a combination of video presentations, a hands-on workbook and group discussions. Information includes age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements.

Helping older drivers improve skills and avoiding traffic crashes and traffic violations are the goals of the AARP Safe Drivers program.

Each attendee will be presented with a certificate upon completion of the two-day course. Since 1992, the program has distributed more than 400 certificates to AARP-trained attendees. To date, more than two million older drivers nationwide have completed this AARP-sponsored course.

The program is limited to 20 participants. To register, persons 50 years and older should send their name, address and telephone number to the Berkshire Health Systems Community Relations Office, 725 North Street, Pittsfield, MA 0120l, along with a $10 check or money order made payable to AARP by June 29th.

Do not send cash.

Telephone reservations will not be accepted.
