Elmo Demo, 91
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Elmo Demo, 91, of Chantilly Avenue died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, in the loving care of Williamstown Commons.Born in North Adams on May 25, 1923, son of Martin and Elvira Baroni Demo, he attended local schools.
He traveled to Europe as a young man and was trapped in Italy during World War II. He fought with the Resistance.
A barber for 58 years, three generations of customers sat in Mr. Demo's chair. Elmo's Barbershop on River Street, which he purchased in 1955, was a friendly meeting place where everyone was welcome. Many of North Adams' problems were solved there and many people depended on the large clock in his window to check the time.
He and his wife, the former Filomena Grande, were married on Sept. 4, 1950, in the former St. Anthony's Church.
Besides his wife of 63 years, he leaves his son, Sergio Demo and his wife, Gail, and two grandsons, Nathan and Wyatt. His sister, Doris Demo, died on Nov. 7, 2011.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Demo will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 25, at 11 from St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday morning from 9 to 10:30 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial donations may made to the North Adams Ambulance Service.
