George L. McMullin, 85

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — George Lawrence McMullin, 85, of Williamstown, formerly of Hawley, Mass., passed peacefully in his sleep on November 28, 2016.

George was born July 8, 1931, in Quincy, Mass., to Margaret Jessie Chase McMullin and Lawrence Laffin McMullin. He attended primary school in Quincy, and High School in Weymouth, Mass., where he was a member of the Cross Country Team, which he captained in his Senior Year. George was 6th in the State Class A division, and 6th in New England as a long distance runner. He graduated from the UMASS Agricultural School in Northampton, Mass., in 1954.

On July 3, 1954, George married Shirley Almena Raymond of Hawley in the First Congregational Church in Shelburne Falls, Mass. Shirley was the daughter of Harrison Lord Raymond and Grace Marion Miller of Hawley.

On July 12, 1954, George (and Shirley) reported for duty as a 2nd LT in the Armor division of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Over his military career he was part of the Armor, Airborne and Jump Divisions. In March 1963, he was assigned to the position of Chief, TOPSECRET-SEATO Control Sec.

George attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. A proud member of the Green Berets Special Forces Unit, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam from 1962-1964 and 1968-1970. George retired in 1974 after 20 years of Active and Reserve Service to his country. After his retirement, George and Shirley returned to the Raymond Family farm in Hawley. Shirley A. Raymond McMullin died on October 24, 2001.

George attained the designation of Senior Agent for Farm Family Insurance, headquartered in Albany, N.Y., as part of the ‘Western Mass Agency’, where former UMASS classmate, Edward Craig, was agency manager. George achieved the national insurance rank of LUTC during his tenure with the firm. George ‘officially’ retired in 1991.

Throughout his career, he served as an Agent working with the Massachusetts Farm Bureau membership handling the insurance needs of the farming community in Franklin County, as well as a brief period of time covering Cape Cod and the Islands. He also worked as a Unit Manager, hiring and training Agents throughout Massachusetts, including his then future-wife Maureen O’Mara when she joined the company as an agent in 1981. After his official retirement in 1991, he continued to provide office support for Maureen, the Farm Family agent based in Williamstown. George married Maureen on June 12, 2009.

He was a member of the Franklin County Farm Bureau, and avid gardener, especially fond of growing Gladiolas and Dahlias most recently. George enjoyed nurturing and watching things thrive and grow. He was a true lover of life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen McMahon O’Mara; his five sisters, Nancy Margaret McMullin, Barbara Ellen Black (C.
