BMC Nurses Give Bargaining Committee OK to Call 2nd Strike
The local Massachusetts Nurses Association chapter has been at odds with management for nearly a year and a half of contract negotiations. In October, the nurses staged a one-day strike, which was followed by a four-day lockout. The two sides returned to the bargaining table shortly after and still have yet to come to a settlement.

SVMC Waiting Rooms Now Kid-Friendly Thanks to Bennington Bank
A "dingy" waiting room at the Women's and Children's Unit was brightened up with new wall colors and paintings, new seating and several interactive play areas with an underwater theme, all with a large window looking out at the Green Mountains. A similar makeover was done to the waiting area in the pediatrics practice but with a jungle theme.

Pittsfield Health: Flu Has Rapidly Increased In Last Two Weeks
In just the last few weeks there has been a 44 percent increase in flu symptoms. Public health nurse Kayla Donnelly-Winters said this year there have been 32 total cases of influenza confirmed in Pittsfield since Oct. 1. That is compared to just 15 in the same period of time last year. But the numbers had jumped in the last few weeks.

Lanesborough Considering Hiring EMTs to Work in Highway Dept.
Town Manager Paul Sieloff is suggesting the town hire EMTs to work in the highway department. The hope is that the town will then have two emergency medical technicians available during the days to answer calls for service. When they are not answering the calls, they will work on projects with the highway department. That would help curb a problem with the ambulance service's struggles to have volunteers available.

Talks Continue Between BMC, Nurses; 2nd Strike Authorization Vote Set
The unionized nurses at Berkshire Medical Center will be voting again to give the bargaining committee the authority to call a one-day strike. Berkshire Medical Center management and the hospital's Massachusetts Nurses Association chapter have been at an impasse in negotiations for a year and a half. In October, a one-day strike was held, followed by a four-day lockout when the two sides couldn't reach a settlement.

SVMC Earns Highest Medicare Rating in Vermont
CMS launched its overall quality rating system in July 2016. Each year, hospital ratings are calculated based on a weighted average of up to 57 quality indicators.

Individuals should not visit patients at any of these facilities if they are under 18 years of age or they are ill or are experiencing flu or flu-like symptoms. These symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, cough or fatigue.

Second Film Tackles North Berkshires' Opioid Crisis
"Voices for Recovery: Building a Recovery Community" is the second locally produced documentary that addresses the opioid crisis in North County. Produced by local videographer Joe Aidonidis, it is the sequel to last year's "Faces: Five Voices from One Community," which focused on personal stories around addiction and recovery.

SVHC Taps New Head of Ambulatory and Continuing Care Services
In her new role at SVHC, Marano will provide administrative leadership to the hospitalís 19 primary and specialty care practices, Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, and several hospital-based services, including Imaging, Laboratory, and Rehabilitation services. She will also work to develop the health systemís strategies for creating additional community health care programs.
