Former Berkshire Place to Transform Back to Independent Senior Living
After opening a brand-new $10 million building on South Street, Berkshire Place is now planning to renovate and transform its former home back into independent living. Berkshire Retirement Home has owned the building at 89 South Street since 1888 when it opened as senior housing as Berkshire County Home for Aged Women. The name was changed in 1960 to Berkshire Place and the operations shifted to skilled nursing and rehabilitation, long-term care, and residential care.

As winter turns into spring — eventually — the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project will once again renew its efforts to prevent the spreading of diseases.

Pittsfield Health Complaint Raises Ire
Thelma Towne says one of her 87-year-old mother's few joys in life is to feed a few stray cats in the neighborhood. But, that came to a crashing halt on March 22 when Nuisance Control Officer Stephanie Provencher paid a visit to the Brown Street home. An anonymous complaint had been phoned into the Health Department that morning saying the food for the stray cats were starting to attract rats.

Labor Board to Hear Complaints Against BMC
The National Labor Relations Board will hear three cases against Berkshire Medical Center. The local chapter of the Massachusetts Nurses Association had filed a handful of unfair labor relations complaints with the hospital over contract negotiations. The labor board has now determined that three of them have enough merit to be heard.

SVMC Welcomes New Physician Assistant to Northshire Campus
Cavalcante received his masters in Physician Assistant Studies and a bachelor's degree in biology both from Union College in Nebraska. His previous medical experience includes positions at Cris Oncology and The Lung Clinic, both in Kissimmee, Fla.

Colonoscopies: A Worthwhile Effort
There are multiple screening tests available for colon cancer. For people of average risk, most doctors recommend a stool test every year, a stool DNA test every three years, and a colonoscopy every 10 years. Although colonoscopy is an invasive test, it is especially effective at detecting colon cancer. Plus polyps and lesions can be removed during the test.

Citizens with Disabilities & Their Families Share Their Stories
UCP is just one of a dozen local agencies working to provide resources to young Kaylee Rae Thompson and other individuals living with a wide range of disabilities. Friday's breakfast was a chance to recognize their triumphs, appreciate the social workers, aides and family members who provide them with support and advocate for needed state funding.
