Lanesborough to Join Mosquito Control Project
A mosquito control program will start in the spring following an affirmative vote at Tuesday's special town meeting. Lanesborough becomes the ninth town the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project will operate in. The state-backed agency focuses on reducing mosquito populations and monitoring for infectious disease outbreaks.

Vermont Regulators Declare Centers for Living and Rehabilitation Deficiency Free
Last month, five surveyors from the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living arrived unannounced for their yearly survey. They reviewed the facility for three days to check that the nursing home is meeting each of more than 300 standards covering every aspect of care, including administration, cleanliness, nursing care, activity programming, protection of resident rights and food service.

E3 Students Create Recipe Cards for Food Pantry
The students came to the church bearing a set of recipe cards, which they produced as part of their quarter-long service-learning project to address issues related to food insecurity. As an added treat, they prepared samples of some of their favorite recipes, like pasta salad and five-layer dip, for the food pantry clients to try out.

Senate Passes Amendment To Help Volunteer Ambulance Services
Some relief for struggling volunteer services is making its way through the legislative process. The state Senate passed a health care bill Thursday night which included an amendment from Sen. Adam Hinds that alleviates the staffing requirements of an ambulance in rural towns. Currently, two emergency medical technicians are required to be on every basic life support transports.

Three Berkshire County Nursing Homes Praised by National Publication
In the Berkshires, Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center in Lenox, Mt. Greylock Extended Care in Pittsfield and Williamstown Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation were among 75 in Massachusetts designated by the national magazine as “Top Performers” in their selection of the best nursing homes in the country.

According to a recent study reported by the Centers for Disease Control, flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by 40 percent to 60 percent. By taking other precautions, like hand washing and avoiding close contact with those who are ill, in addition to getting a flu shot, you get excellent overall protection.

Massachusetts Health Connector Begins Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment starts on Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 23, 2018, longer than the Nov. 1-Dec. 15 federal deadline, and is consistent with past Massachusetts Open Enrollment periods. Pittsfield Forum Touts Marijuana as Medicine
McKinnon specifically focused on it being used as harm reduction to help people curb opioid addiction when she spoke at the Berkshire Atheneum last week. Canna Cares is partnering with Berkshire Roots, a medical marijuana cultivator and distributor, set to open on Dalton Avenue later this year or early 2018. The two put on a forum to explain what they do.

Pete Townshend Helps Raise $18K for Hillcrest Cancer Center
Last month before Pete Townshend hit the stage at Tanglewood to perform Quadrophenia, he held a small fundraiser at Highwood Manner. The group had dinner with the Who singer, Billy Idol, and Alfie Boe. The money was to be donated to Townshend's Teen Cancer America Foundation and the Hillcrest Cancer Center at Berkshire Medical Center.
