Be Safe When the Temperatures Soar
"It's important for everyone to realize that warm weather can be dangerous," said Holly Grant, regional chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts. "The Red Cross has steps you can follow to make sure you and your loved ones are protected when hot weather hits your area."

Pittsfield Warns of Increased Tickborne Illnesses
The department has been ramping up a public education campaign to help inform people the best ways to protect themselves. The effort is in response to an increasing number of tick-borne illnesses being reported.

Strike Averted: Hospital, Nurses Union Reach Agreement
The nurses union and the hospital have tentatively settled on a contract, averting what would have been the second strike. Bargaining for three consecutive days and stretching late into the night, Berkshire Medical Center and the local Massachusetts Nurses Union chapter settled on a five-year deal. That agreement needs to be ratified by a vote of the full 800 members.

Middle Ground Sought In Pittsfield Mosquito Control Plans
City Councilors think they've found a compromise with the Board of Health over mosquito control. The council's Public Health and Safety subcommittee met again on the issue Thursday night in the wake of pushback and a petition from citizens to end the adulticide spraying. Councilors Helen Moon and Peter Marchetti filed a petition to leave the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project.

BMC Registered Nurses Plan to Strike Again
The nurses union has re-issued its plans to strike after lengthy negotiations Monday. The Massachusetts Nurses Association's Berkshire Medical Center chapter is planning to strike again. The union and the hospital has been attempting to settle a contract for more than a year and a half after the last contract expired in September 2016. In October, the nurses went on a one-day strike which was followed by a four-day lockout.

SVHC to Hold Centennial Community Day on June 10
The day's events are extensive and include activities for all ages. It is free and open to the public. It will be completely tented and will take place rain or shine.

Dr. Nelson, a Lenox resident, has practiced family medicine since 2005 in Pittsfield, and has served as director of medical education at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge. She has also served as medical director for The Nutrition Center in Pittsfield.
