Weather-related updates for Wednesday, December 9

Due to today's snow storm, several cultural events in Pittsfield have been canceled. Others, however, are continuing as scheduled!  So don't be afraid to venture out tonight if you so choose: just dress warmly and give yourself some extra travel time to get where you are going...

Ferrin Gallery recommends calling them to confirm whether their scheduled artist salon on sustainability for local visual arts is still happening tonight at 6:30pm. Their number is 413.442.1622.
 

Rescheduled: Tricks of the Trade with Kevin Sprague

Tonight's free artist workshop on branding and promotion with Kevin Sprague has been postponed because of the weather and will now be held Monday, December 14th, at 6:30pm at the Ferrin Gallery, located at 437 North Street in downtown Pittsfield. The workshop is part of the Tricks of the Trade workshop series organized by the Berskhire Cultural Resource Center in coordination with the City of Pittsfield Office of Cultural Development and Berkshire Creative.

Postponed: Women of Color Giving Circle event

The fifth anniversary celebration of the Women of Color Giving Circle of the Berkshires, originally scheduled for this evening at Club Groove, has been postponed. A new date in January will be announced shortly.

Still happening! Stonewall cocktail party at Berkshire Museum

Tonight's holiday cocktail party at the Berkshire Museum, organized by the Berkshire Stonewall Community Coalition for the LGBT community and their friends and allies, will continue as scheduled tonight, Wednesday, December 9, from 7pm to 9pm.  Admission is $10 at the door, reservations not needed, and delightful nibbles will be provided by Jae's Spice.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
