Cultural Pittsfield wishes you happy holidays!

All of us here at Cultural Pittsfield wish you a very creative holiday season! We encourage you to enjoy the many wonderful holiday concerts this weekend, to support local shops and artists, and to remember that family memberships to the Berkshire Museum or Hancock Shaker Village, Colonial Theatre gift certificates, and flex passes from Barrington Stage Company make excellent gifts that keep giving! We also want to let you know that the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts will be closed from Dec 20, 2009 to Jan 2, 2010 for our annual winter nap. Friday-Sunday: Punk Fundraisers @ Rebel Sound Records

Rebel Sound Records’ Annual ChristMESS Eagle Santa Toy Fund Benefit Show kicks off this Friday for a two night punk extravaganza featuring some of the best bands around donating their time and talent.  The Damaged, Reason 837, Millions Dead, Collosus, and Bare Bones perform Friday night and are guaranteed to please all in attendance.   Saturday night, Dennis Most & The Instigators, The Uncomfortables, The Prozacs, The Capps, and The Poncherellos perform for a very worthy cause.  The Eagle Santa Toy Fund helps to ensure a special Christmas for local area children in need.

Friday: David Grover with Grover’s Gang @ the Colonial

David Grover with Grover’s Gang performs a holiday musical celebration for all ages to enjoy.  Grover, a Pittsfield native and current West Stockbridge resident has been one of the most popular performers in the Berkshires for the past 20 years, releaseing over twenty albums!  The evening also features the Berkshire Theater Festival Children’s Chorus.

Saturday: Candlelight & Chocolate Tours of Arrowhead

Starting Saturday and continuing for the next three weekends through early January, The Berkshire Historical Society at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead will feature Candlelight and Chocolate Tours of its beautifully decorated 1783 farmhouse during the holiday season.  The tour offers an intimate view of Arrowhead by candlelight, followed by a reception featuring hot mulled cider and a chocolate tasting.  Due to limited space, reservations must be made in advance.

Saturday: Studio Sale & Art Show

The shops and restaurants in the 400 block of North Street are banding together this Saturday for an Upper North Street Block Party for last minute shopping and merriment. It's also the last day of Berkshire Museum Appreciation Week. Show your Berkshire Museum membership card or Festival of Trees receipt stub at local 400 North Street businesses and they will donate 10% of your purchase to the museum.  On Union Street, Gallery 25 hosts a holiday group show featuring 6 Art.on.No artists.  Emporium hosts a Minc House studio sale featuring 25-75% off items such as pillows (see left), scarves, and other home goods great for last minute holiday shopping.

Saturday: An Irish Christmas at the Colonial

Eileen Ivers captures the spirit and magic of the season in this heartwarming holiday show. The program features traditional Irish songs, original tunes and specially arranged holiday favorites such as “The Holly Tree,” “Don Oíche úd I mBeithil” (One Night in Bethlehem), “Hark the Herald Angels,” “The Wexford Carol” and more. An Nollaig is a special celebration for all ages by the legendary Irish fiddler Ivers, described by the New York Times as “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin.”

Saturday & Sunday: Home for Christmas Concert with Matt Cusson & Friends

Barrington Stage Company and St. Joseph’s High School are teaming up to present hometown musician Matt Cusson in his first-ever, headlining holiday concert, Matt Cusson and Friends: Home for Christmas at Barrington Stage in Pittsfield.  Following tours and shared stages with superstars including James Taylor and Christina Aguilera and, most recently, many years with Brian McKnight, Matt Cusson will bring several famous friends from musical and Broadway stages for two unforgettable holiday concerts in the Berkshires. Featured performers include special guest Shoshana Bean, Michael Joseph, Tyron Chase, Prescott Ellison and Chris Loftlin as well as the St. Joseph’s High School Chorus.

Saturday: Vegan Christmas Feast at Dotties

Dottie’s hosts a vegan holiday dinner with the Dancing Vegan this Saturday night. Reservation required for these dinners because space in the cozy cafe is limited.  Saturday’s menu includes borscht with tofu sour cream and fried beet greens, wild mushroom crepes with cream sauce, apricot glazed tofu, mashed potatoes, and almond nog pudding with cherry sauce lace cookies and chocolate truffles and more!  Wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Sunday: Neo-Folk Matinee @ Rebel Sound Records

Pennsylvania natives Trunks & Tales perform their new tour EP in a set of acoustic folk/punk. They're joined by fellow Pennsylvanians and alt folksters, the Ship Wrecks.  In addition to the neo-folk folks, local rapper Dreimz performs in the matinee.

Saturday & Wednesday: Mia Dyson & Andy Wrba perform @ Dotties

Mia Dyson, Australian blues rocker, will be returning to Mission for one last performance of 2009. A dead-ringer for Bonnie Raitt, you will not want to miss this show if you have not seen her perform live yet. Samantha Farrell opens. 

And wednesday evening join Andy Wrba and Friends as they play their favorite holiday songs, covers, and jazz standards in a show that all are sure to enjoy!

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
