WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.— In the last dual meet of the season, the Eph women punctuated their stellar season by downing the Middlebury Panthers 206-85 on Saturday. The Williams women finished the dual meet portion of their season undefeated versus Division III teams (7-0) and 1-1 versus Division I teams for an overall record of 8-1.

The Ephs came out strong, setting the tone with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 Medley Relay, 1,650 Free and 200 Free. Head coach Steve Kuster was pleased with how the women ended their season.

"It’s always nice to close out the dual meet season undefeated against Division III teams and the women were dominant throughout," said Kuster.

Kuster added that the strength of the Ephs was that they were, "versatile, flexible and strong in every meet with a lot of different contributors in a lot of events."

One of Saturday’s biggest contributors was sophomore diver Hannah Wilson. Wilson posted NCAA qualifying scores in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving en route to winning both events. Eph diving coach Kit Callahan Koch was very proud of her emerging sophomore.

"Hannah is working hard and figuring it out as she goes, with this being just her second year of diving. She just may be the one to beat at NESCACs on both boards," Koch said.

On Senior Day, Lisa Cucolo won the 200 Breaststroke with a NCAA B-Cut time of 2:25.67 and had what coach Kuster called "the best swim of the meet." Sophomore Logan Todhunter won the 200 and 100 Fly and posted a NCAA A-Cut time of 2:03.74 in the 200 Fly. Other noteworthy swims included Senior Sophia Sequeira’s victory in the 200 Free (1:56.88) and Gigi Campo’s first sub one-minute swim in the 100 Free (59.33).

The lone highlight for the Panthers came in the meet’s final event when they took top honors in 200 Free relay winning in 1:40.99. Next weekend the Ephs will participate in the two-day Middlebury Invitational of Feb. 5 and 6.

The Williams men’s swim team ended their regular season with a convincing win over the Middlebury Panthers 175-122. The Ephs (7-2) battled hard to send their seniors out with a win in a meet, which saw multiple momentum changes.

In the first men’s event, Middlebury out-touched the Williams Medley Relay by 6 hundreths of a second for the win. However, the Ephs responded fiercely by claiming 8 of 9 top three spots in the next three events, including 1-2-3 finishes in the 200 and 1650 Freestyles.

On Senior Day, the Ephs performance was spearheaded by standout freshmen Paul Dyrkacz and Phil Treesh. Dyrkacz had victories in the 200 Back ( 1:56.70 ) and 200 Free ( 1:45.39) while Treesh won the 100 Backstroke in 54.06 and had a solid third place finish in the 500 Free.

Chris Corbett contributed with a win in the 400 IM (4:12.27) and second in the 200 Free. Coach Kuster noted that he was pleased by senior Eddie Layng’s 2:00.73 performance in the 200 Fly.

With the victory, the Ephs finished undefeated in Division III meets, largely due to their resilience and grit. As Ephs head coach Steve Kuster put it:

"The men had to scratch and claw their way through the Division III dual meet season because they are not as deep as the women’s team, but they did it without suffering a loss."

The Eph men finished 7-2 overall on the year with both losses coming at the hands of Division I teams.

Panther highlights included John Dillon’s National “B” time of 1:54.44 in winning the 200 Fly and sweeping the 100 Free. Nick Daly won the 100 Fee in 48.80, Schuyler Beeman took second and Jay Li claimed third.

The Ephs will hit the road next weekend to compete at the Middlebury Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
