Brooklyn's Slavic Soul Party plays all-American jazz through an Eastern European filter.
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Do you have New Orleans Super Bowl fever; are you yearning for Mardi Gras?

Well, if you can't get to the Big Easy you can still sample some New Orleans flavor at the 5th annual MCLA Presents! Blues and Funk Festival this Thursday, Feb. 4, and Friday, Feb. 5. Shows begin both nights at 7:30 in the Venable Hall gymnasium on the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts campus to allow lots of room for dancing.

Kicking off the festival on Thursday will be the Eastern European-flavored Slavic Soul Party (of Brooklyn, N.Y.).

"The nine-piece Slavic Soul Party embraces a wild variety of music as it mixes the messed-up rhythms of the Balkans with gypsy music, funk, soul, rock and jazz for a sound. No matter what they are playing, it is hard to keep your feet still,"  said Jonathan Secor, director of special programs at MCLA. "Slavic Soul Party takes much of its inspiration from New Orleans party traditions, playing non-stop with a punk-rock energy that has won them fans all across the country."

Opening on Thursday night will be Hawa Umarova, an MCLA sophomore originally from Chechnya, once part of the former Soviet Union, as well as the MCLA Jazz Band under the direction of Jamie Choquette.

The party will continue on Friday night with the return of headliner Big Sam's Funky Nation. The New Orleans band is led by Dirty Dozen Brass Band trombonist Big Sam Williams.

Big Sam and his funky band return to MCLA for the Blues and Funk Festival.
"Big Sam and his Funky Nation will continue the five-year MCLA tradition of a Mardi Gras party in the Berkshires and, with the New Orleans Saints, so close to the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras a week away, there are truly reasons for New Orleaneans and Berkshirites alike to party," said Secor.

Opening for Big Sam will be local favorites and MCLA alumni billy G and the BlueZone with their version of hard-hitting, old-school blues, and MCLA's high-stepping step team Nexxus.

New North Adams Restaurant Approved for Liquor License

By Tammy DanielsiBerkshires Staff
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A new restaurant on Main Street, a provisions shop and a convenience store all got the nod from the License Commission on Tuesday.

Siblings Colleen and Sean Taylor are expanding their cuisine empire yet again with the establishment of Main & Mill in the old TD Bank. They were before the commission to apply for an all-alcohol license.

The building is owned by Ginko on Main Street LLC, which has granted 20 years exclusive possession of the property to Latent Builds as the developer. Jack and Suzy Wadsworth, behind Ginko, are development partners with Salvatore Perry and Karla Rothstein of Latent.

The bank closed in early 2021 and purchased by Ginko late that year. Plans for the property unveiled three years ago envisioned a restaurant, retail, a park and rooftop bar.

The building's hosted some pop-up eateries and is currently under construction for the new restaurant.

Colleen Taylor said the restaurant will be open seven days a week serving lunch and dinner, and be open early for coffee.

"It's not going to be a very big restaurant. It's about the same size as Trail House, except for Trail House has a bigger patio, so about the same seating," she said.
