Friday & Tuesday: Contemporary Art in Downtown Pittsfield

Friday evening the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts hosts an opening reception for the third annual Pittsfield Contemporary juried exhibition of new art by Pittsfield artists. This opening is sponsored by Mission Bar and Tapas & The Market, and is followed by an open house at the new storefront home of pittsfieldcontemporary.com at 305 North Street, featuring fresh affordable art & workspace. Tuesday, join MASS MoCA Director Joe Thompson for a conversation on modern art – what makes art “art” and who is its audience?

Friday+: A Thousand Clowns & much more!

Five different theatre productions are performing around town this week! Above the Beacon Cinema is A Thousand Clowns, a  hilarious and touching Tony Award-winning story of an unemployed television writer trying to adapt his cantankerous worldview in order to find work and retain custody of his 12-year-old nephew. Barrington Stage Company features Art, a thought provoking, deliciously witty, Tony Award-winning comedy, the brand new musical Pool Boy , and Into the Woods is a brilliant retelling of several well-known fairy tales – performed by young members of the community.  And finally, you can help your kids unwrap The Mummy’s Tale at the Berkshire Museum.

Friday: Maureen McGovern + Groove Barbers @ the Colonial

Maureen McGovern brings her show A Long and Winding Road: The Concert (with Jeffrey Harris on piano) to the Colonial Friday night! This promises to be an eclectic concert, bringing an introspective look at the songs that inspired Maureen McGovern before her Academy Award-winning hit The Morning After. Also check out the Groove Barbers and their four-part a capella harmonies on Saturday at the Colonial. Mountain Breeze, a local folk trio, will play before the show.

Friday –Thursday: Joan Rivers & Kung Fu Panda

This coming week the Berkshire Museum's Little Cinema features a revealing documentary about the ups and downs of sometimes controversial figure. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work exposes how Joan Rivers fights tooth and nail to stay the queen of comedy, giving us a glimpse of the comedic process and how anger and insecurities are usually what fuels it.  For more lighthearted fun, pick up some popcorn at the Lion’s Club Popcorn table, and catch the free family-friendly movie Kung Fu Panda at Common Park Friday night (rain cancels).

Saturday: Pittsfield City Hoopla Hula Hoop Festival!

Saturday everyone's invited to Pittsfield City Hoopla, a multi-arts festival in Springside Park inspired by the craft, craze and creativity of the hula hoop. From a mother-daughter team hooping in harmony, to fun workshops and chair massages, you’ll want to come out to the park for this all-day event. There will also be guided tours of the forest eco-system and gardens. Come back in the evening for fire dancers, illuminated hoops and drumming under the stars!

Saturday: The Gather-In at Pitt Park

The Gather-In is Berkshire County's only traditionally African-American community festival that’s lasted nearly 30 years. It features traditional home-style food, children’s activities, and a basketball tournament. There’s great live entertainment, including performances by Youth Alive and the hip hop troupe Ecstatic, and vendors throughout the park.  Everyone's invited!

Saturday evening: Baseball & Comedy at Wahconah Park!

The Pittsfield Colonials are back at Wahconah Park after a string of wins elsewhere, and playing games through Wednesday, July 28. Saturday night, it’s an entertainment double-feature starting with a ball game followed by a post-game comedy show with comedian Jim McCue from Boston!  He's been featured on Comedy Central, Comcast Comedy Spotlight, NBC's Last Comic Standing, & more. Sunday: Mettawee River Theatre Company presents The Woman Who Fell From the Sky

Sunday evening don't miss the annual FREE family-friendly outdoor performance by the award-winning Mettawee River Theatre Company at Springside Park!  They use masks, giant figures, puppets & other visual elements with live music, movement and text, & draw on myths, legends and folklore of the world's many cultures. This summer they are performing The Woman Who Fell from the Sky, drawn from the Iroquois creation tale in which the Sky Woman falls from the spirit world and lands on the back of a turtle.  Free & fun for the whole family, & a magical evening under the stars!

Monday: An Improv Troupe Throwdown!

WAM Theatre and NSPAC have joined forces to host the first ever improvisation throw-down between The Mop & Bucket Co., Albany's top improv comedy troupe and the Royal Berkshire Improvisation Troupe.  It’s a ONE NIGHT ONLY face off to benefit WAM Theatre and the NEW STAGE Performing Arts Center. The evening's  judges are Seth Rogovoy, editor of the Berkshire Living; acclaimed writer Daniel Klein; and Pittsfield's cultural director Megan Whilden.

Monday: An Evening with Judy Collins

For more than 40 years, Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretive folksongs and contemporary themes. You can catch her performance for only one night – at the Barrington Stage Company. Collins won the 1975 Grammy for Song of the Year for her version of Stephen Sondheim’s "Send in the Clowns."

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
