William M. Chittenden, 92

ADAMS, Mass. — Mr. William Martin Chittenden of Adams died peacefully on Friday, December 2, 2016, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield after a brief illness. 

He was born in Adams in 1924. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, V. Marguerite (Isabelle) Chittenden. 

He served as a Marine during World War II from 1942 until being honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1946. He continued to serve his community in many ways. He was a member of the Alert Hose Company in Adams for 36 years and served as Fire Chief for 15 of those years. He was an active member of the Adams Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, Adams Post 160 American Legion and was a lifelong member of the Forest Park Country Club. He was a communicant of the Parish of St. John Paul II. 

As a well-known mechanic he had various jobs and eventually was the proprietor of Pleasant Street Garage and Buster's Service Station. Until recently he managed the Commercial Street Mobil Station for many years. 

Besides his wife, Bill is survived by three daughters, Sandra Gamari and her husband Michael of Winsted, Conn., Susan Chittenden of Merrimack, N.H., and Sheila Kowalski and her husband Norman of Granville, N.Y.; two sons, Mark Chittenden and his wife Laurie of Adams and Matthew Chittenden and his wife Barbara of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Chittenden of Adams; 10 grandchildren, Eric Gamari of Torrington, Conn., Amanda Ferguson of Sherwood, Ore., Jordan Kowalski of Destin, Fla., Suzann Kowalski of Oakland, Calif., Nathan Chittenden of Savoy, Lindsay Chittenden of Cheshire, Joshua Chittenden of Adams, Courtney Chittenden of Pownal, Vt., Heather Swistak of Cheshire and Anali Chittenden of Adams; 10 great-grandchildren, Alaina Chittenden, Wyatt and Olivia Ferguson, Viktor and Trevor Kowalski, Taylor and Madison Galipeau, Maya and Owen Gamari, and Brynna Swistak; one brother, M. Donald Chittenden of Adams; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his son, Martin Chittenden; his daughter Shirley Chittenden; his brother, Harold Chittenden; his sister Charlotte Scarbo; and by a son-in-law, James Davin. 

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at 9 a.m. from the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame des Sept. Douleurs Church, McKinley Square, Adams, celebrated by Rev. Steven Montesanti, Pastor. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. 

Calling hours are Tuesday, December 6, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alert Hose Company, 3 Columbia St., Adams, MA 01220, the Adams Lions Club, P.O. Box 23, Adams, MA 01220 or to the Parish of St. John Paul II, P.O. Box 231, Adams, MA 01220.
