Gertrude L. Oles, 84

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Gertrude Lilymay (Lasher) Oles, 84, of Holy Family Terrace in North Adams, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, died Monday, December 5, 2016.

Born on Sept. 13, 1932, in Hyde Park, N.Y., she was the daughter of Marion and Seymour Lasher. She was raised in the Hyde Park area and attended Hyde Park schools until her marriage.

Gertrude, known as Trudy to her friends, married Everett Oles Sr. on September 26, 1947. After leaving the Hyde Park area, they lived in Red Hook, N.Y., and Millerton, N.Y., before moving to Pittsfield, Great Barrington and then Dalton, Mass., where Everett died on July 16, 2004. After his death, Trudy moved to North Adams, where she made many friends in the Holy Family Terrace senior housing building.

Trudy was a homemaker who raised five children. She also worked at the former Ames department store in Amenia, N.Y. She enjoyed spending time with family and doing puzzles in the community room of Holy Family. She was known for the beautiful afghans, doilies and scarves that she crocheted for friends, family and community agencies like the Village Ambulance Service.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Oles and his wife Cindy of Bennington, Vt., and Everett Oles Jr. and his wife Jane of Pownal, Vt.; two daughters, Patti Mansfield of North Adams and Rosemary O’Connell and her husband Bill of Coeymans Hollow, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, Kelly Kilmer and her husband Walter of Millerton, N.Y., John Oles and his wife Jennifer of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Carrie Mead and her husband Tom of Becket, Mass., Alice Cross of Pittsfield, Melissa Chancey and her husband James of Bennington, Vt., Rebecca Dravis and her husband Stephen of Williamstown, Mass., Petra Miller of Canaan, Conn., and Terrence Miller and his wife Nicole of Sharon, Conn.; 11 great-grandchildren, Victoria and Eric Golden of Millerton, N.Y., Josephine Oles of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Shawn Gaudette of Great Barrington, Aaron and Alliyah Mead of Becket, Xavier Humes of Becket, Unique Nelson-Oles of Pittsfield, Faith and Elizabeth Cross of Pittsfield, and Noelle Dravis of Williamstown, with whom Trudy shared many Pokeno and bingo games and rolls of pennies at Holy Family over the last decade; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son William Howard Oles, who died on December 11, 2000; one grandson who died at birth and one great-granddaughter who died in infancy; and all of her brothers and sisters.

Funeral notice: Per Trudy’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A graveside service will be held at Irondale Rural Cemetery in Millerton, N.Y., at 1 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations in Trudy’s name can be made to the North Adams Ambulance Service, 10 Harris St, North Adams, MA 01247, or the Berkshire VNA, 165 Tor Court, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
