Charles E. Burnick, 83

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Charles E. Burnick, 83, of 159 Ridgeway Ave., Pittsfield, died peacefully Wednesday February 22, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Pittsfield on January 15, 1934, the son of the late Charles F. and Mary Martin Burnick, he was educated in local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he played two years of varsity baseball. He proudly served his country in the United States Army; he was honorably discharged with a rank of corporal, after he spent 19 months in France during the Cold War and Korean War.

Charles retired from General Electric with 37 years of service, 25 in the plastics department. He enjoyed swimming in Onota and Pontoosuc Lakes and at Hampton Beach. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and carpentry. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan for over 70 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Adeline K. Vanetti, whom he married April 19, 1958 in Solvay, N.Y.; his daughter, Sandra J. Burnick-Mangano of Pittsfield; his son, Charles P. Burnick of Pittsfield; his daughter, Colleen M. Burnick-Mitchell and her husband Kirk of Hancock, Mass.; five grandchildren, Bryan P. Mangano and his wife Anne of Iowa, Sean C. Mangano and his wife Samantha of Belchertown, Mass., Christopher C. Burnick of Pittsfield, Emma K. Burnick of Pittsfield and Lucy A. Mitchell of Hancock; two great-grandchildren, Charles F. Mangano and Adalyn N. Mangano; a sister, Ruth Donovan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Fleming; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Fleming and William Donovan.

Funeral notice: Funeral services for Charles E. Burnick, 83, who died February 22, 2017, will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 9 a.m. with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church celebrated by the Rev. Monsignor Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with Full Military Honors. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations in memory of Charles may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
