Warner L. Smith, 90

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Warner L. Smith, formerly of Williamstown, Mass., died Thursday, July 13, 2017.

Warner was born in Nuremberg, Germany, on February 23, 1927. He was the only child of the late Justin and Lina (Gutmann) Smith. Warner and his family left Germany to come to the United States in 1939 and he was raised in New York City.

Warner was the beloved husband of Amely (Baer) Smith (Germany and Woburn, Mass.) for 66 years, as well as a devoted father and grandfather to Edward Smith and his wife Joanne, their daughter Abigail and her fiancé Andrew Petrsoric; Joel Smith and his wife Sarah Larson, and their daughters Rachel and Rebecca; and Dr. Allen Smith and his wife Denise DuChainey, and their children Caroline, Connor, Ian, and Timothy.

Warner was a graduate of City College in New York, where he studied chemical engineering. He began his career at Woburn Hyde & Leather and then was the vice president and co-owner of R.J. Widen Company, later Berkshire Tanning Company, in North Adams, Mass.

Warner and Amely resided in Williamstown, Mass., for 43 years. Warner was an active member of many community organizations: the Williamstown Democratic Town Committee, Officer of Northern Berkshire Ham Radio Club, twice President of the Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, head of Religious Education, and Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. Warner's last residence was Brooksby Village in Peabody, Mass., where he and Amely have lived for the past 13 years. He continued to be a diligent and dedicated member of the Brooksby Community. Warner was the Vice President of the Resident Advisory Committee, selected to be on the Resident Representative to the National Erickson Advisory Board, and active in many other social, religious and political committees. His wisdom, wit, compassion and companionship will be missed by many.

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held at the Beth Israel Cemetery in Clarksburg, Mass., on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at 1 p.m. A memorial will be held at Brooksby Village at a later date.

Donations in Warner's memory may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923 or the Brooksby Benevolent Fund, 101 Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody, MA 01960. Arrangements are under the direction of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals.

Recollections & Sympathy For the Family
Post Comment
We were very much saddened to read of the passing of Warner Smith. We had known the Smith family from their arrival in Williamstown until their departure.
We grew up with Ed, Joel, and Allen and spent many happy hours in each other's homes. We miss them and think of them often. Warner did so much for so many people. May he rest in peace!
