Leon E. Meier, 85

ADAMS, Mass. — Mr. Leon Edward Meier, 85, "Mayor of Columbia Terrace," Adams, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 6, 2017, at his home.

He was born in Adams on July 4, 1932, son of the late Leon and Josephine (Szura) Meier. He attended schools in Adams and graduated from the former Adams High School with the class of 1951. He went on to earn an Associate's Degree from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMASS Amherst in 1956.

Mr. Meier was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the United States Navy until receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1953. Mr. Meier last worked as a supervisor for the former Pfizer Co., Adams, until retiring in 1991. He had also worked for the Town of Adams as the Sealer of Weights and Measures for 17 years and as an Animal Inspector for two years.

He was a communicant of the Parish of St. John Paul II Parish, Adams. He was a member of the Adams Lodge of Elks, the Adams Post 160 American Legion, the Berkshire Beagle Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a former member of the Adams Turn Hall, the Mountain Club, the Adams Hound and Hunt Club and had been a committee member for the former Boy Scout Troop 3.
Mr. Meier had also been a longtime Adams Town Meeting Member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards, especially poker, pitch and cribbage. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and attended sporting events of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Frances H. Owczarski, whom he married on November 24, 1955; two sons, Alan Meier and his wife Doris of East Chatham, N.Y., and David Meier and his wife Rachel of Ashfield; one daughter, Ann Meier of Adams; five grandchildren, Michael Meier, Matthew Meier and his wife Nellie, Christopher Meier, Josephine Meier and Jacob Meier; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017, at 9 a.m. from the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, McKinley Square, Adams, celebrated by Mr. Meier's nephew, Rev. Matthew Alcombright. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams.

Calling hours are Sunday, November 12, 2017, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to the St. John Paul II Rosary Sodality Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 231 Adams, MA 01220.
