Dennis J. Whitney, 62

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Dennis John Whitney, 62, of North Adams, Mass., died peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2017, at his home. 

He was born in North Adams, Mass., on March 23, 1955, a son of the late John F. and Jennie (Malkowski) Whitney. Mr. Whitney attended Drury High School, where he graduated with the class of 1973. He went on to attend Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.  

He began his career as a pharmacist working with his father at the family run business, Whitney’s Drug Store. He later became the owner and operator of the business, located at the corner of Holden and Main Street in North Adams. There was also a second location in Adams, Mass. Later in his career he earned a certification in Geriatric Pharmacy and worked as a consultant in nursing homes. He was last employed at Thorpe’s Pharmacy in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.

In his younger years, Mr. Whitney was a member of the North Adams School Committee, served as a volunteer firefighter in Clarksburg, and was a Clarksburg Selectman. He enjoyed candlepin bowling, live music concerts, playing golf, watching the New York Giants, and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He loved racehorses, vacationing in Hampton Beach, N.H., boating in Lake George, NY and held a special bond with his late dog, Tacoma.

Survivors include his daughter Shannon Anson and her husband, Adam, of Delmar, N.Y.; sons Jon Whitney and his wife, Katie, of Andover, Mass.; and Brian Whitney and his wife, Maria, of Glens Falls, N.Y.; grandchildren Tyler, Dylan and Kayla Whitney; sister Gail Burda and her husband, Paul of North Adams; brother Scott Whitney and his wife, Terry, of Haw River, N.C.; as well as nephews Michael Rougeau, Zachary Whitney and Matthew Whitney.

Funeral notice: Calling hours for Dennis Whitney will take place on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. 

A service to celebrate his life will be at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Donations in his memory can be made to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

I remember Dennis as a young man at Dr. M.J. Burgin's office where he was a model patient.
When he later ran Whitney's Drug Store in the same building I remember complimenting him on his success.
A great person.
