Richard. S. Shaw, 79

SOUTH EGREMONT, Mass. — Richard. S. Shaw, 79, passed away on March 3, 2018, after a long illness.

He was born on September 26, 1938, in Great Barrington, Mass., and was the son of the late Forest and Grace Stevens Shaw. A native of the Berkshires, he graduated from the former Searles High School with the class of 1957. After high school, Richard proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of his military service, Richard began working at Becton-Dickinson in Canaan, Conn., where he retired after thirty-three years of dedicated service.

Richard's true passions were the opera, theater and the arts.  When not working, Richard enjoyed attending events at Tanglewood and loved visiting New York City, to enjoy fine dining, attend the theater or visit a museum to see an art exhibit.

Richard's other interests included studying 18th century history, as well as researching his family genealogy.  Richard was an avid collector of fine china, art, books and paintings. Richard delighted in striking up a conversation with anyone by sharing a funny story or joke. He was also known as the life of the party, with his quick wit and charming smile.

In later years, Richard and his mother could be seen shopping and running errands around town, enjoying plays and going out to dinner. He was a devoted son and caretaker to his mother in her last years.

During his illness, Richard did not allow it to slow him down or prohibit him from doing the things he loved. He would frequently make jokes of his illness, keeping a positive attitude that showed his true strength of character.

Richard is survived by his brother, Harold Shaw and his wife Doris of Round Mountain, Texas; his nieces Dorinda Withers, Barbara Withers, Nancy Shaw and nephews James Withers and Stephen Withers; and many grand- and great-grandnieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Withers; and his nephew Todd Shaw.

Funeral notice: There will be a memorial service at a later date to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Gt. Barrington, MA. 01230 who is handling arrangements.
