Louis A. Axt Sr., 73

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Louis Alvah Axt Sr., 73, of North Adams died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at his home.

Born in East Orange, N.J., on March 16, 1940, son of Franklin D. and Leonora Keen Axt, he attended Williamstown schools and graduated from the former Williamstown High School with the class of 1958. He earned his bachelor's and master's degree from the former North Adams State College.

A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he served on the USS Intrepid.

Mr. Axt retired as assistant superintendent of the North Adams Public Schools. He began his career as a biology teacher at Drury High School and later worked in the Bennington, Vt., school system until returning to North Adams.

He was a member of the former First United Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Stamford, Vt.

He and his wife, the former Nancy Labombard, were married on July 2, 1966.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mea Jowett and her husband, Brian A. Jowett, and Deanna Brooks and her husband, David, all of North Adams; a son, Louis A. Axt Jr. and his wife, Terry, of North Adams; a brother, Franklin D. Axt of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, Benjamin R. Jowett, Peyton A. Jowett, Layla G. Brooks and David M. Brooks Jr., and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother Robert Axt.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Axt will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will be private.

Calling hours will be Wednesday morning from 9 to 11 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eileen Barrett Oncology Unit at North Adams Regional Hospital in care of the funeral home.
