William M. Kirby Jr., 87

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — William Moses Kirby Jr., 87, of 1108 North Hoosac Road died on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at the BMC Emergency Satellite Facility in North Adams. Born in North Adams on Sept. 3, 1926, the son of William and Gertrude Roy Kirby, he was a 1945 graduate of Drury High School and attended Northeastern University. He served as a sergeant with National Guard, and retired as lieutenant colonel from the Civil Air Patrol. After becoming a registered architect in 1958, Mr. Kirby opened his own office in Williamstown shortly thereafter. He designed many projects in Berkshire County and Southern Vermont, including the Northern Berkshire YMCA, the North Adams Regional Hospital's Doctors Building, numerous banks and commercial and residential properties. He won several awards for his designs, most notably for the Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Wilmington, Vt. Mr. Kirby was a past president of the North Adams Ski Club, the Northern Berkshire Jaycees, the Massachusetts Society of Architects and was a member of the American Institute of Architects. He also served as president of the International Flying Architects Association and the Williamstown Board of Trade. A former member of the Williamstown Planning Board, he served as chairman of the Sign Commission for five years and was a Chairman of the Republican Town Committee. A private pilot with the single and multiengine ratings, he owned his own plane. He was also a member of Williams Lodge of Masons, past master of Greylock Lodge and a member of Melha Temple of the Shriners. An avid golfer, he belonged to Taconic Golf Club for almost 50 years. A member of White Oaks Congregational Church, he served as moderator, trustee and member of the choir. He was also a member of the Berkshire County Sheriffs Association. At the age of 4, he unveiled the Civil War Monument on Main Street in Williamstown as mascot for the American Legion. He leaves his wife, the former Mary Ann Boucher; a daughter, Susan L. Kirby of North Adams; two sons, William M. Kirby III of North Adams and David C. Kirby of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, John J. Kirby of Pittsfield; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an adopted sister, Ruth Luscier. FUNERAL NOTICE — A private memorial service for Mr. Kirby will take place at a later date. Burial will be in the Eastlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations can be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital in Springfield through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall Street, North Adams.
