Leonard S. Smith, 91
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Leonard S. Smith, 91, of 249 Franklin St. died on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield.
Born in Westfield on April 17, 1923, a son of Raymond S. and Mary Margaret Murphy Smith, he attended local schools and graduated from Westfield High School in 1941. He later attended Westfield State College.
A Marine veteran of World War II, he served as a radioman with the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific theater.
Mr. Smith had a long career in the printing business, retiring as president of Excelsior Printing Co. in 1991 after 28 years with company.
He first joined his brother-in-law at Prospect Park Press Printing Co. He worked for other printing companies in the Springfield area until coming to Excelsior as plant manager in 1963.
Additionally, Mr. Smith served as director and clerk of Adams Co-Operative Bank for 26 years. He was a director of the Northern Berkshire YMCA, a trustee of the former North Adams Regional Hospital and chairman of Hemlock Brook Park board of trustees, and belonged to the Northern Berkshire Industrial Development Group, the Governor's Task Force and the North Adams State College Foundation.
An avid golfer, Mr. Smith was a member of the Taconic Golf Club for more than 40 years.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, the former Mary Terese Cleary; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Walter Whelan of Nashua, N.H., and two grandsons, Sean Whelan of Nashua and Brian Whelan and his wife, Whitney, of Merrimack, N.H.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Smith will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Westfield.
Calling hours to remember the life of Mr. Smith will take place on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.
