Steven Forrest, 68
ADAMS, Mass. - Steven Forrest, 68, of Edmunds Street died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at home of cancer.
Born Aug. 28, 1946, he lived in the Boston area until moving from Brookline to North Adams in 1987.
An artist, Mr. Forrest's works in watercolor, gouache and ink were small in size, but large in concept and impact. Painting and drawing were central to his life.
He showed his paintings in Boston, Cambridge, North Adams and several venues in Vermont.
He also was employed as a civil draughtsman for more than 30 years, both in Boston and the Berkshires. There were highway intersections, signage, and wastewater treatment plants he would proudly point out as ones he had worked on or designed.
He never ceased to delight in the beauty of the Berkshire Hills and loved to take long walks in all sorts of weather, relishing the feel of wind and rain in his face.
An omnivorous, through and eclectic reader, he loved the feel and smell of a book as well as its contents. He collected them, and re-read favorites many times. He delighted in Saturday jaunts with his family to various area towns, where the scenery, local bookstores and a good lunch were invariably enjoyed.
A man who when young considered himself a loner, Mr. Forrest learned to enjoy many friendships, and loved good conversation, especially over a leisurely dinner, said family. He was known for his often irreverent humor, wide-ranging knowledge of diverse topics, keen insight, powers of observation, and attentive listening.
An exceptional husband, father and friend, his departure leaves a large void.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Erica Forrest, and his son, Michael Forrest of Adams.
