Eugene Wein, 93

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Eugene Wein, 93, formerly of Phelps Avenue, died on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, at Williamstown Commons, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Wein was a longtime Northern Berkshire civic and business leader and devoted Drury High School sports fan. Born in North Adams on Feb. 7, 1922, a son of Harry and Anna Kronick Wein, he attended schools in North Adams, graduating from Drury High School in 1939. He graduated in 1943 from Massachusetts State College, now the University of Massachusetts, where he was the manager of the football team. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he enlisted after college and served as a corporal. Mr. Wein was the longtime owner and operator of the former Wein's Shoe Store on Eagle Street. He was an active member and former president of Congregation Beth Israel, for which he coached basketball in the North Adams Church League. His love of basketball extended to Drury High School, where he was acknowledged as Drury's No. 1 sports fan. He served as master of ceremonies at many end-of-year sports banquets and, in 2002, Drury High School renamed its annual Christmas tournament the Gene Wein Holiday Tournament in his honor. His wife, the former Jacqueline Diana Winer, whom he married on Oct. 12, 1947, in Springfield, died on May 2, 2006. He leaves his son, Lawrence Wein and his wife, Anne, of Palo Alto, Calif.; three daughters, Sherry Wein and her husband, Robert Wray, and Roberta Sullivan and her husband, John, all of North Adams, and Paulette Wein of Adams; two sisters, Selma Weitz of Brookfield, Conn., and Gertrude Silverstein of Needham; and six grandchildren, Andrew Sullivan, Aaron Wray, Emily Sullivan Pace, and Alexander, Nicole, and Natasha Wein. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Stanley Wein of Valley Stream, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral service for Mr. Wein will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. at the MCLA Church Street Center, 265 Church St., North Adams. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery in Clarksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Congregation Beth Israel or the Drury High School Basketball Booster Club, in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. Shiva memorial observances will take place at Congregation Beth Israel on Lois Street on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 5-6, and at the home of Paulette Wein, Berkshire Mill, One Berkshire Place, Adams, on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9. On each evening, Shiva will start at 7, with a brief service at 7:30. The family would like to thank the Williamstown Commons staff for its extraordinary care and compassion, and to express their deepest gratitude to friend and caregiver Stephen Michalenko.
