Jack Widitor, 87

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Jack Widitor, 87, of 76 Alfred Drive, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 10, 2016, at Mount Greylock Extended Care facility after a long illness.

Born in New York City on June 13, 1928, He attended Central Needles High School in the Fashion District of Manhattan and graduated as part of the first class of the Fashion Institute of Technology. He first found his way to Pittsfield as manager of the former Glix-Brand pajama factory on Brown Street, meeting his beloved wife, the former Jane Kobritz.

An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

After his service, Mr. Widitor joined his brothers-in-law, the late Nathan Kobritz and Irving Lazerus, at Tyler Home Supply in the Morningside neighborhood. He owned and operated Tyler Home Supply for more 40 years, retiring in 1995. After his retirement, he was actively involved in the business and enjoyed working with his son, Peter, in store.

He was, for many years, also a devoted assistant to his father-in-law, the late Charles J. Kobritz, in the management of Seymour Realty Co. He was a well known figure in the Morningside area, and always had a friendly greeting for everyone. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Pittsfield Family YMCA and enjoyed early morning exercise classes and water aerobics. He also served on the Y's board of directors for a period of time.

Mr. Widitor was also an avid member of Knesset Israel Synagogue on Colt Road and enjoyed going to services as well as serving on the synagogue's board. He was commander of Louis Green Post 140 Jewish War Veterans from 1966 to 1967, and remained active in the organization for many years. He was particularly proud of his work with the "Classmates Today, Neighbors Tomorrow" scholarship program sponsored by the JWV.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Scott Widitor and Peter Widitor, both of Pittsfield, and David Widitor of Brooklyn, N.Y., and nine grandchildren.
