George C. Wheeler, 88

LEE, Mass. — George C. Wheeler, 88, of 765 Fairview St. died Sunday, April 24, at his home.

He was born in Chicago on November 11, 1927, the son of George and Adelaide Spencer Wheeler. He was educated in schools in Eastchester, N.Y., and during WWII he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Macon.

After the service he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y., graduating in 1951. Upon his graduation George was employed by the Connecticut General Insurance Company in Group Sales in Springfield. 

He was a former member of the West Springfield Rotary Club serving as President in 1992. He later joined the Tri-Town Rotary Club in Lee. He was very active, serving on various committees at RPI and also served as President of its Alumni Association. 

George enjoyed golfing, traveling and gardening.

He and his wife, the former Jane B. Russell, whom he married September 3, 1950, moved to Lee in 1976.

Besides his wife he leaves his son, James B. Wheeler of Lee; his brother Philip Wheeler and his wife Judy of Roanoke, Va.,; as well as, many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce DuBreuil.

Funeral notice: Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Those wishing may make donations to an animal shelter of their choice in care of the Kelly Funeral Home at 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
