Mary 'Mania' Janowski, 94

ADAMS, Mass. — Miss Mary "Mania" Janowski, 94, resident of Williamstown Commons, passed peacefully on June 4, 2016.

One of nine children, Mary was born in Adams on August 11, 1921, a daughter of the late Thomas and Sophie (Tomkiewicz) Janowski. Mary attended the Adams public schools until the Great Depression when, like so many of that generation, she left to find employment to help support the family.

In addition to working at the Berkshire Mills, she spent many years at the Arnold Print Works and then at Waverly Fabrics, retiring in 1983. She was a communicant of the former St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Adams, and was a member of the Adams Council on Aging.

Remembered for her Blue Ribbon apple pies, her life was dedicated to providing love, compassion and kindness to her extended family, especially to her nephew, Thomas Chalmers and his family.

She is survived by one sister, Julia Janowski  of Adams; four nephews, William Herman and his wife Bobbi of California, Charles Hartlage of North Adams, Bruce Hartlage and his wife Susan of Springfield, and Glen Chalmers and his wife Amy of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and four nieces, Donna and Linda Hartlage of North Adams, Beverly Hartlage Souza of Okeechobee, Fla., and Dawn Chalmers Gillespie and her husband Robert of Newburyport, Mass.

She was great-aunt to 16 great-nieces and great-nephews and she shared an especially close and loving relationship with Justin Gillespie of Cambridge, Kate Gillespie Severson and her husband Erik of Bedminster, N.J., and Dylan, Emma and Cameron Chalmers of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She also leavers her dearest friend of many years, Gladys Czubryt.

She was predeceased by one brother, Frank; six sisters, Blanche and Helen Janowski, Mildred Chalmers McGlynn, Harriet Herman Pelcynski, Josephine Bugbee and Stacia Hartlage; and by two nephews, John "Boots" Hartlage and Thomas Chalmers.

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. in the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Adams.

Calling hours are Wednesday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Adams Youth Center, 20 East St., Adams, MA 01220 or to St. Stanislaus Kostka School, 108 Summer St., Adams, MA 01220.
