Omar Montoya, 47
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Omar Montoya, 47, of Delray Beach, Fla., recently residing in Williamstown, died on Thursday, July 21, 2016, surrounded by family and friends at Albany Medical Center.
A kind and gentle soul with an immense love of people, Omar was born in Peru and grew up in Glen Cove on Long Island. He studied at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and moved to Williamstown to work as the first chef at Mezze Bistro in 1996. Omar worked with the organization for more than 10 years.
Omar moved to Boca Raton, Fla., and worked for various restaurants in Del Ray before moving to New Jersey to work with Fresh Co. Two months ago, he returned to Williamstown to work with Mezze Catering + Events.
As a chef, Omar was an inspiration to so many people in the kitchen. Adored by his colleagues and friends, he sparked the passion of dozens of chefs and generously shared his knowledge and his delicious food wherever he went.
He is survived by his mother, Elba Ecca; his brother Willy Montoya; sister Patricia Savvides; two nephews, Savvas and Alex; and ex-wife Adriana Scuta.
He was predeceased by his father, Pedro Montoya.
A joyful celebration honoring Omar’s life will take place at Mezze Bistro + Bar in Williamstown on Sunday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
