James F. Richardson Sr., 78

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — James Foster Richardson Sr., 78, of Williamstown and formerly of Rye, N.Y., died on Friday, August 5, 2016, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.

He was born in the same hospital in which he died on January, 12, 1938, son to the late Ernesto and Alice (Foster) Richardson.

Jim attended high school at the Northfield Mount Herman School and graduated from Williams College in 1959. After Williams he graduated from Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Navy. He was a three-year veteran, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis aboard the USS Chikaskia AO-54 out of Baltimore.

While in Baltimore he met his wife, Barbara, of almost 54 years. They moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he worked as a salesman for American Pad and Paper (AMPAD), a company for which he later served on the Board of Directors. After leaving AMPAD, he became an institutional equities broker working for Smith Barney, Lehman Brothers, and Wertheim Schroder until his retirement in 1999.

Jim enjoyed playing golf at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, the Apawamis Club in Rye and Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. If not on the golf course, he could be found handicapping thoroughbreds at Belmont Park and Saratoga Racetrack or growing tomatoes in his backyard.

Survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Elizabeth Hall, whom he married on September 22, 1962; one daughter, Cynthia Richardson Ryan and her husband Douglas Joseph Ryan of Hingham, Mass.; one son, James Foster Richardson Jr. and his wife  Maria Ballantoni Richardson of Rye, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Taylor James Ryan, Lindsay Barbara Ryan, James Foster Richardson III, Amelia Hall Richardson and Thomas Joseph Richardson.
