Michael N. Layne

Michael N. Layne, 51, of Main Street died Tuesday at his home. Born Jan. 1, 1951, in Boston, son of Evangeline Kantos Layne of East Longmeadow and the late Michael M. Layne, he attended schools in Northampton and East Longmeadow, and graduated from East Longmeadow High School in 1968. After attending St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire, he lived in Vail, Colo., where he became an expert skier and managed or was employed at several local restaurants before becoming a real estate broker. He returned to Massachusetts, where he worked at the Fox Hollow and Lakecrest resorts in Lenox and Pittsfield, respectively. In 1991, he opened The Gaslight Café in South Egremont, which he operated until his death. He was active in local fund-raisers and charitable causes. He annually hosted a Halloween party for children and served on the Egremont Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a crossword enthusiast, animal lover and student of the English language. He leaves his mother; his wife, Catherine Doran Layne; his stepdaughter, Elissa MacDowell at home, and his brother, Evan Layne of Boston. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Michael N. Layne died Dec. 10, 2002. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the First Congregational Church in South Egremont with the Rev. Kevin Smail officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, from 4 to 7 at the FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catherine Layne, beneficiary for the Michael Layne Memorial Fund.
