Joseph R. Kashmann, 89

STAMFORD, Vt. — Joseph Robert Kashmann, 89, of Main Road died on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at North Adams (Mass.) Commons after an extended debilitating illness.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on Oct. 1, 1923, to Seymour and Beatrice Kashmann, he graduated from Hartford Public High School, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, and master's of science degrees in chemistry from the University of Bridgeport, Conn., and Southern Connecticut State University.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces.

Mr. Kashmann was a chemistry teacher at Joseph A. Foran, Jonathan Law and Milford high schools, all in Milford, Conn. He also taught chemistry at Southern Connecticut State University and was the recipient of numerous National Science Foundation study grants.

Beginning in the 1970s, he maintained a second home in Readsboro, Vt., and moved there permanently in 1982 following his retirement. He and his wife, Marjorie, were avid downhill skiers for more than 40 years and Mr. Kashmann skied until he was 84. He and wife also enjoyed square dancing, tennis and horseback riding.

Active in politics in Milford and Readsboro, he was a former chairman of the Readsboro Democratic Committee. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Alpenwald Association.

He and his wife, the former Marjorie Rosoff, were married on Jan. 15, 1950

Besides his wife of 62 years, he leaves three daughters, Jyll (Jill) Kashmann of West Hartford, Conn., Betsy Kashmann-Myrow and her husband, Jay, of Warwick, N.Y., and Margaret Moss Kashmann and her partner, Eric Leighton, of Readsboro, and two grandchildren, Jora Myrow of Austin, Texas, and Uriah Kashmann-Myrow of Warwick.

He was predeceased by a brother, Malvin Kashmann, and a sister, Doris Kashmann.

FUNERAL NOTICE — According to his wishes, Mr. Kashmann donated his body to the University of Vermont Medical School. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, 214 Barker Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201, in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA 01247.
