TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER COMPOSITION FELLOWS ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION WITH SHAKESPEARE & COMPANY

For the first time since stepping down as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa returns to the BSO podium to lead a performance of Mahler’s powerful Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Resurrection, on Saturday, August 5, at Tanglewood. The 8:30 p.m. concert in Tanglewood’s Koussevitzky Music Shed features the Boston Symphony Orchestra with soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, John Oliver, conductor.

Maestro Ozawa, now the BSO’s Music Director Laureate, led the orchestra from 1973 to 2002 - the longest tenure of any music director in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 125-year history. Seiji Ozawa is currently the music director of the Vienna State Opera, as well as the artistic director and founder of the Saito Kinen Festival, Japan’s preeminent music and opera festival.

Yo-Yo Ma and the BSO perform the world premiere of celebrated composer Osvaldo Golijov’s new work for cello and orchestra, Azul, a BSO 125th anniversary commission, at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, August 4, in the Shed with Donald Runnicles conducting. Azul is a 21st-century work that evokes the majesty of certain Baroque adagios by Bach, Handel, or Couperin. Mr. Runnicles also leads Janá*ek’s Idyll for strings, Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra with pianist Lars Vogt will perform the chamber music of Mozart, Dvo*ák, and Michael Haydn in a 6 p.m. prelude concert.

Mr. Runnicles also leads the BSO and Mr. Vogt in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat, Op. 73, Emperor, at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, in the Shed. The program begins with Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 in D, K.504, Prague, and Strauss’ Suite from Der Rosenkavalier. This Tanglewood season features performances of all five Beethoven piano concertos with five of the world’s eminent pianists: Imogen Cooper (Concerto No. 1, August 25); Emanuel Ax (Concerto No. 2, August 26); André Watts (Concerto No. 3, July 28); Yefim Bronfman (Concerto No. 4, August 27); and Lars Vogt.

Tanglewood Music Center And Shakespeare & Co.

The Tanglewood Music Center and Shakespeare & Company team up for their fifth collaboration at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, in Ozawa Hall. All six TMC Composition Fellows will provide music for “PLAYing with Music: Scenes from Antony and Cleopatra.”

“As we all know, composers of concert music typically work in solitude,” said Michael Gandolfi, TMC composition program coordinator. “However, this project requires that the composers work communally, in addition to their regular working modes. The freshness of this open approach to their work has revealed depths of creativity that could only occur in such an environment. It is very satisfying for me to witness these discoveries.”

The collaboration is overseen by Mr. Gandolfi and stage director and actress Tina Packer.

This year’s TMC Composition Fellows are Timothy Andres, Patricio da Silva, Stephen Gorbos, Derek Jacoby, Seung-Ah Oh, and Katherine Soper. Their music will be performed by the New Fromm Players (Yuki Numata, violin; Benjamin Russell, violin; Nadia Sirota, viola; Mira Costa, cello; and Amy Advocat, clarinet) with additional brass players. Readings will be done by Shakespeare & Company actors, including Tina Packer as Cleopatra, Nigel Gore as Antony, Jason Asprey as Octavius, Kenajuan Bentley as Enobarbus, and eight summer performance internship actors in a variety of supporting roles.

Previous partnerships between Shakespeare & Company and the Tanglewood Music Center - the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s elite summer music academy - have included recorded incidental music for productions of King Lear, Coriolanus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Winter’s Tale. Founded by Tina Packer in 1978, Shakespeare & Company is one of the nation’s largest Shakespeare festivals. The Lenox-based company aims to merge the historical strengths of British and American actors - the spoken word and physical prowess, respectively - in a reinvigorated vision of Elizabethan theater.

Additional Tanglewood Music Center Performances
