Hoosac Valley's Alibozek, Lenox's Huth Honored

For this week’s iBerkshires.com Athletes of the Week, the toughest competition sometimes comes from their own teammates.

Both Lenox freshman Ellen Huth and Hoosac Valley junior Derek Alibozek have led their respective teams to unbeaten starts to open the fall season.

And the common denominator for the two has been the depth of the teams they lead.

Huth this week placed second in the season’s second cross country race and was chased across the line on her home course by two Lenox teammates, Maggie Sorrentino and Marion Huth, in third and fifth places, respectively. Ava Bachman gave the Millionaires a fourth top 10 finisher.

It looks like Lenox has not lost a beat after graduating individual champion Emma Jourdain from last year’s Western Massachusetts Division 2 title squad.

And it is no surprise that Ellen Huth has taken the lead for Lenox. She placed sixth at the sectional last fall as an eighth-grader and went on to place 23rd at the state meet, helping the Millionaires finish third in the commonwealth.

Alibozek, a junior is one of a handful of Hoosac Valley golfers to routinely score in the 40s -- a combination that has been hard to beat for other Berkshire County golf squads this fall.

On Monday, he finished at 36, two over his personal best of even par on Hoosac’s home course at Forest Park Country Club.

Alibozek had a solid 45 in Hoosac’s second match of the week, but that was good for just the third-best round that day for the Hurricanes. Henry Sniezek took his turn atop the leaderboard on Thursday with a 37.

The best news for the Hurricanes might be that none of this year’s scorers are seniors, meaning Alibozek and his teammates might be leading the way on the county’s links for some time.
