WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- A game that started with two goals in the first two minutes came down to defense on Tuesday on Mount Greylock’s John T. Allen Field.

Sam Dils scored twice, and Toby Foehl had a goal and an assist for the Mounties in a 3-1 win over Monument Mountain, but the key for Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils was at the other end of the field.

“Our defense was again very good today at home as we limited Monument to just a few really good scoring opportunities,” Dils said. “Colton Adams, Will Reynolds and Alex Backiel were particularly strong and snuffed out many plays before they could develop."

In the first minute of the game, Brady Foehl sent a through ball to Dils, who left-footed a shot past Kevin Kelly (three saves).

Moments later, the Spartans (4-2-1) executed a series of seven or eight passes in the final third that ended with Noel Powell scoring with an assist from Ben Bardurski.

Things then settled down, but the Mounties (5-2-1) broke through when Toby Foehl headed home a corner kick from Quinn Johnstadt for the eventual game-winner.

The third goal came with five minutes left to play. It started with a ball over the top from Toby Foehl.

“[Sam Dils] corralled it with a defender hanging all over him and slid it past the onrushing Kelly,” Blair Dils said.

“We did well to break through with the third goal. That cushion allowed us to relax and take the air out of the game. We managed the end of the game well.”

Mount Greylock takes a three-game winning streak into Friday’s home game against Pittsfield.

Monument Mountain hosts Monson on Friday.
