Hornets Look Sharp in Shutout over Saints

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Either the McCann Tech girls' soccer team is getting better as the season goes along or the Hornets are really tough to beat at home. After Mike Dowling's squad picked up a 4-0 win over St. Mary's on Friday, it just might be a little bit of both.

McCann (14-1-1, 11-1-1) squeaked by the Saints 4-3 on the road last month but was much better against its Tri-County League rival the second time around. One reason for that is the three goals and one assist put up by senior forward Mary Nguyen. Another reason could be the comfortable home surroundings in which the Hornets are now 8-0.

Nguyen netted her eighth hat trick of the season, getting the scoring started less than five and half minutes into the game. She later set up classmate Alexa Durant for a goal in the 19th minute before adding an unassisted tally 13 minutes later to give McCann a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Nguyen added another strike in the second half, adding extra insurance for junior goalie Alex Wood. The Hornets' keeper made six saves in the match to record her eighth shutout of the year. Alexa Watson stopped eight shots in a losing effort for St. Mary's.

McCann returns to action on Tuesday with a game at Pathfinder at 4 p.m.
