NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- A couple of early defensive lapses were costly, but, overall, McCann Tech girls soccer coach Mike Dowling was pleased with his young team’s showing against a solid Ware side on Friday afternoon.

Four different players scored for the visitors as Ware handed McCann a 4-0 decision and a fourth-straight loss to open the year.

“This is the premier team in our league,” Dowling said of Ware. “We frustrated them. I’ve got 13 players, mostly freshmen and sophomores. We’re still experimenting with where I want even my experienced players.

“They moved the ball better … and at least they’re seeing where they want to go with the ball. I’m really happy that they’re coming together, they didn’t quit. They could have just laid right down.”

Ware jumped out to a 3-0 half-time lead.

It got all the scoring it needed in the 21st minute when Sydney DiMarzio slid a cross from the left wing into the 18 for Alyssa LaRose, who buried the shot to make it 1-0.

Ware added a second goal in the 32nd minute, scoring on the first of two corner kicks it converted in the game when Olivia Vadnais knocked in Jackie Dugay’s cross.

Moments later, Hailey Hernandez went top shelf from the left side of the 18 to make it 3-0.

“Gave up those two goals in the first half because they weren’t marked,” Dowling said. “I’ve got girls who have never played soccer. By the end of the season, they’ll mark that girl. I’ll give them the 1-0 in the first half, but the two defensive mistakes by my new girls …

“In the second half, I know we didn’t get much offense, much run, but we did better in [the defensive third].”

Another Dugay corner kick led to Ware’s fourth goal. This time Aidyn Walsh headed the ball past McCann Tech keeper Savannah Reynolds, who made 15 saves in the loss.

“And she’s never played goal,” Dowling said. “A new goalie. … I have some experience in the middle of the field with Krista [Furlon] and Emma [Marino]. But pretty much all my outsides are new.

“All in all, we played OK. Keep an eye on us, and we’ll get better.”
