WESTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Hampshire girls soccer team advanced past Hoosac Valley on penalty kicks on Saturday afternoon after the teams played to a 0-0 tie through regulation and two overtime periods in their Western Massachusetts Division 3 playoff game.

“Both teams battled hard and it is a tough way to lose,” Hoosac coach Kathy Budaj said. “We had opportunities and so did they, but in the end the ball never went in the net. The girls really played a great game tonight and I am proud of the way they just kept working. For some reason this season we have struggled with finishing and putting the W on the board.

Grace Kronick made five saves for the Hurricanes, who finished the year with a record of 6-5-6.

Eighth-seeded Hampshire (8-7-2) moves on to the Western Mass quarterfinals at No. 1 South Hadley (16-1-1), who had a bye in the first round of the tournament.
