DALTON, Mass. -- The first time was a charm for Lee High’s Thomas Fraser on Thursday at Wahconah Country Club.

Playing the back nine for the first time in his life, Fraser fired a 3-over-par 39 to lead Lee to a 183-185 win over host Wahconah.

“The round was definitely fun,” Fraser said. “It’s a new course for us. We usually play the front nine. It’s challenging. It’s definitely very tight. I’m happy with a 39.”

The highlight of Fraser’s day came on the 430-yard, par-4 16th hole, where he recorded a birdie that ended up looming large in the team score.

“I started off with a good drive,” Fraser said. “That was good to get ahead in the hole. And then I was focused on getting it close to the pin so I had an attempt at a birdie. I got it close and was able to get the [6-foot] putt.”

Hunter Roosa backed up Fraser with a 44, and Bryce Whalen and Colin Finnegan each scored with a 46 and a 59, respectively.

Wahconah was led by Jon Dos Santos and Noah Bracci, who each finished at 45. Nate Dos Santos and Sam Clayton completed a tight grouping for Wahconah with a 47 and a 48.

Wahconah is back in action on Monday at home against Hoosac Valley. Lee hosts Monument Mountain on Tuesday.

Fraser said the Wildcats are off to a strong start this fall.

“Definitely, so far, so good,” he said. “Our No. 3 and 4 guys are definitely doing good this year, and then we have a couple of new guys at No. 5 and No. 6. They were alternates last year. They’re definitely getting better. I’m seeing improvement this year. They’re doing well.”
