Powell Leads Taconic Wrestlers to Fifth-Place Finish

WAYLAND, Mass. -- Zabion Powell won the individual championship at 145 pounds Saturday to lead the Taconic wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at the Wayland Holiday Tournament.
 
Powell earned an 8-4 win over Melrose’s Steven MacIntosh in the title bout. Powell picked up two pins in the first couple of rounds before earning a 6-4 win in the semi-finals.
 
Three Taconic wrestlers reached the championship finals in their respective brackets.
 
At 170, Dylan Burke advanced with a 3-1 win over Melrose’s Cam Rose in the semis before falling to Framingham’s Dylan O’Brien, 9-2, in the final.
 
At 113, Mike LaFreniere advanced with a pair of pins before falling by pin to Newton North’s Kyle Randall in the final.
 
At 195, Shawn O’Shea advanced with a pair of one-minute pins and an 11-6 win over Wellesley’s Luke Celi in the semis. But Framingham’s Rony Hernandez won the final, 9-6.
 
Taconic finished with 143 points. The team title went to Walpole (238 points).
