ADAMS, Mass. -- Derek Alibozek Friday got off to a fast start and avoided a disastrous finish to take medalist honors and lead the Hoosac Valley golf team to a 159-183 win over Mount Greylock at Forest Park Country Club.

Alibozek carded a 4-over-par 38 to edge teammate Henry Sniezek and Mount Greylock’s Ben Gillooly, who tied for second at 39, and the Hurricanes scored four players at 42 or below to run away with it.

Hoosac’s No. 1 player looked to be running away with things himself when he sank a short birdie putt on the 270-yard, par-4 first hole.

But Alibozek needed to rally late to hold onto the individual lead for the day.

“It started off really good with a birdie on the first hole, and you can never complain about a birdie,” he said. “Then I went on a streak of pars. I made a few bogeys here and there.

“But [No.] 7 really got to me. I had a triple bogey on 7. I shook it off and finished with two straight pars, so that’s always good.”

His playing partner, Sniezek, finished his day with a birdie on the 277-yard, par-4 ninth hole to pull into the tie for second.

Hoosac Valley’s scoring was rounded out by Corbin Craig with a 40 and Luc Trombley with a 42.

Gillooly was joined in the scoring column by teammates Brayden Smith (43), Lilly DeFreitas (49) and Alexander Axt (52) as Mount Greylock dropped to .500 on the young season at 1-1.

Hoosac Valley picked up its second win of the opening week and its second win on its home course.

“Course knowledge factors in pretty big,” Alibozek said. “Just knowing your way around this course makes a big difference in how you score and what you can do with your putting and chipping and how you play this course.

“I think it’s a pretty big factor.”

Hoosac Valley goes to Pittsfield on Monday while Mount Greylock visits Wahconah.
