Wahconah Boys Win Sectional Title

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Eric Klem won the 800 meters, placed second in the mile and ran a leg on a victorious 4-by-400 relay team on Saturday to lead the Wahconah boys track team to victory at the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Sectional Championships.
 
Wahconah finished with 59 points, beating out second place Auburn (48). Hoosac Valley finished third with 39 points.
 
On the girls side, Bromfield School captured the team title with 56 points, seven better than runner-up Frontier.
 
Wahconah also had the best girls finish in Berkshire County with 38 points for fifth place, one point better than Lenox.
 
Freshman Matthew Lighten won the 200 meter dash for Wahconah in a time of 22.67 seconds to edge Hoosac's David Haley (22.80).
 
Klem captured the 800 in 1:59.54, shaving better than three seconds off his seed time and beating Hopedale's Joseph Grider (2:01.43). Fellow Wahconah senior Dalton Hill was third in the 800 (2:01.70).
 
In the mile, Klem ran a time of 4:29.81, finishing behind Bromfield's Nick Steele (4:21.98) but ahead of Berkshire County rival Carter Stripp of Mount Greylock, who was fourth in 4:36.22.
 
In the 4-by-800, Klem ran the anchor leg of a quartet that featured Hill, Jeff Pullano and Lighten. They finished in 3:34.82, beating out Uxbridge (3:35.75).
 
For the Wahconah girls, Maddie Sprague won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 2 inches and finished third in the triple jump (34-11.5), the best Berkshire finish in the event.
 
Wahconah's Gianna Moncecchi finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.97) and fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:08.40).
 
Sophomore Lily Pudlo of Wahconah was the fourth in the girls pentathlon, compiling 1990 points to finish behind Lunenburg senior Madeline Cochran (2202).
 
Lenox's Amber Shove was second in the 400 (1:00.50), where she wsa just .44 behind champion Miriam Wood of Quabbin, and eighth in the 200 (31.45), the only county racer to make the finals. In the 400 hurdles, Shove's teammate Shannon Meisberger clipped the first hurdle but recovered to finish second by a margin of one-tenth of a second to Sutton's Mackenzie George (1:06.74).
 
Championships earned by Berkshire County athletes on Saturday included Mount Greylock's girls 4-by-800 relay (Ella Dudley, Maddie Albert, Margo Smith and Laura Galib), who edged Auburn by a margin of 10:04.48 to 10:05.77.
 
Several other Berkshire County residents finished in the top four of their respective events, earning the right to compete in next weekend's all-state meet.
 
That list includes Mount Greylock eighth-grader Maddie Albert, third in the 800; Lenox's 4-by-400 relay (Shove, Maggie Sorrentino, Tova Brown, Meisberger); Lenox's 4-by-800 relay (Emily Tibbetts, Alice Najimy, Sorrentino, Emma Jourdain); Wahconah's Shamus White, third in the 100; Mount Greylock's Carter Stripp, fourth in the mile; Lenox's Tucker McNinch, fourth in the 3200; Hoosac's 4-by-100 relay (Dante Sandifer, Haley, Avery Hall, Tyler Mach); Lenox's 4-by-800 relay (Tucker McNinch, Sam Darbey, Chris Najimy, Philippe Mortelliti); and Hoosac's Trevor Ciempa, third in the high jump.
 
DIVISION 1
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- At Saturday's Central/Mass Division 1 sectional, Pittsfield High's Josh Bonny placed second in the 110 hurdles.
 
Bonny finished in 15.52 seconds, behind Shrewsbury's Ethan Melia, who set a meet record with a time of 15.11.
 
Bonny's teammate Evan Bossio placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 149 feet, 1 inch.
 
Taconic's Evan Kalinowsky was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 154, and Matt Rabasco was seventh in the 3200 (10:03.64).
 
In the girls meet, Taconic's Hannah Barbarotta was eighth in the javelin with a throw of 102-10.
 
Pittsfield's Amanda Wright was fifth in the 200 (:26.62) and ran anchor on the Generals' eighth-place 4-by-100 relay. She teamed with Lauren Farry, Olivia Nda and Kasey Harrington to clock a time of :52.61.
