Monument Mountain Girls Tennis Reaches Western Mass Final

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The Monument Mountain girls tennis team defeated Mount Greylock, 4-1, on Wednesday in a Western Massachusetts semi-final match continued from Tuesday.
 
The second-seeded Spartans (16-0) won two three-set singles matches to advance to Friday's sectional final against Lee (12-5) at the Lenox Community Center.
 
At No. 1 singles, Monument's Sam White defeated Tara Shastri, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 Cara Freidman picked up another point for the home team with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over Melina Sfakianaki.
 
In doubles play, the Monument team of Emily Martin and Molly Amstead defeated Mount Greylock's Tyra Nurmi and Charlotte Rand, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). At second doubles, Carly Shafiroff and Hailey Higgins defeated Mount Greylock's Rachel Swoap and Katie Mick, 6-4, 6-2.
 
The Mounties got their point at No. 3 singles,where Mariza Sfakianaki defeated Jen Evans, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
 
"It couldn't get much closer," Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. "I couldn't have prouder of my girls."
