WILLIAMSTWON, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock girls volleyball team defeated Taconic Monday evening in straight sets.

Serving was key to the Mounties' win. They came out in the first two sets and took the lead from the start. They had a nine-point run in the first set to put them ahead, 13-4. Taconic came back with a few shots at the Mounties, but they quickly ended up putting the first set away 25-8.

We’ve been working really hard on serving,” Coach John Albano said. “That really paid off and opened up our offense.”

It certainly did pay off; in the second set the Mounties quickly took the lead. Senior captain Celia Bote put them ahead 11-5 and then shortly after they eased to a 25-10 win.

Taconic showed some fire in the third set and put the Mounties to work. They came out on a 10-point run and from there the two teams battled back and forth to the end. Taconic fell two points short of capturing the win as the Mounties found their rhythm again and won 25-23.

Although Taconic fell short tonight, its coach was very pleased with their performance. In the third set it finally found a rhythm that worked and one that it hopes to carry over to its next match.

We’ve got a lot of new players,” Taconic coach Jen Doerle said. “But in the third set we moved players around and I think we found our niche”

Mount Greylock will travel to Wahconah Wednesday evening, and Taconic will host Pittsfield High.
