Athletes of the Week: Williams & Walden

Isiah Williams
Taconic High

Berkshire County wrestlers were well represented at last weekend's Western Massachusetts Division 3 championships, and Taconic sophomore Isiah Williams was a big part of the county's success at the Mountie Dome. Williams battled to four wins to win the 145-pound title, taking three opponents the distance.

His toughest battle may have come in the semi-finals, where he defeated Hampshire Regional's Nick Hoskin, 7-5, for a berth in the championship match.

"It feels great," Williams said after winning in the finals. "It's something I worked for, and I'm really glad I got it."

Arianna Walden
Mount Greylock

There is not much doubt who the player of the year has been for the Mount Greylock girls basketball team, but when senior star Lucy Barrett went down with an ankle injury with five games left and a Western Massachusetts tournament bid very much in doubt, the rest of the Mounties had to make up for the sizable gap left in their lineup.

Walden helped pick up the slack, scoring 15 points, 16 points and 13 points in three straight wins to put Mount Greylock in next week's postseason. After a forfeit win over St. Joseph on Wednesday night, the Mounties head into Thursday's regular season finale against Mount Everett with a record of 10-9.

iBerkshires Sports and Capital Region Honda Dealers, including Bedard Honda in Cheshire, will be spotlighting two Berkshire County high school athletes each week, a boy and a girl, who best excelled in their sport or boosted their teams' efforts.
