Taconic in Lead after Day 1 of Western Mass Championships

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Taconic wrestling team is in first place with nine wrestlers in the semi-finals after the first day of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Championships.
 
Zabion Powell made short work of his first opponent, earning a pin in 59 seconds to open his run at 145 pounds. Mount Greylock’s Dom Green then took Powell into the fourth minute before Powell came away with the pin.
 
Deven Pekosz (106), Mike Lafreniere (113), Zach Mathes (126), Mike Puskey (152), Dylan Burke (170), Tanner Hastings (195), Shawn O’Shea (195) and Teyler Hiestand (220) each advanced to Saturday morning’s semis for Taconic, which finished the first day with 91 points.
 
Hampshire stands in second place with 73.5 points with Franklin County on their heels in third place with 71 points.
 
Monument Mountain is seventh out of 17 teams with 59 points.
 
The Spartans have five wrestlers through to the semis: Caleb Pollard (106), Sam Cormier (132), Dorian Page (138), John Field (170) and Sean Flaherty (220).
 
In 11th place, Mount Everett has two wrestlers contending for a sectional title on Saturday. Zack Lupiani advanced to the semis at 106, and Pat Fosby is alive at 120.
 
Mount Greylock’s lone hope for an individual title is Liam Feeley at 182. He advanced on Friday with a pair of pins to face Hastings in the semis.
 
The county is guaranteed at least three finalists on Saturday afternoon. Saturday morning’s other all-Berkshire semifinals are Pekosz vs. Pollard at 106; Flaherty vs. Hiestand at 220.
 
The semi-finals get under way at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
