Powell, Field Alive at All-State Wrestling Meet

DANVERS, Mass. -- Taconic's Zabion Powell and Monument Mountain's John Field advanced through the round of eight in the consolation bracket at the 2018 MIAA All-State Wrestling Championships at St. John's Prep on Friday.
 
At 170 pounds, Field pinned Taconic's Dylan Burke at 5 minutes, 41 seconds of their consy round of eight match on Friday night.
 
The win gave Field a record of 3-1 on the day with all three wins in the consolations.
 
Taconic's Powell improved to 2-1 with his late Friday pin in the 145-pound consolation round of eight.
 
All six of the county's representatives at the All-State Wrestling Championships were dropped into the consolation bracket on Friday's first day of competition.
 
Taconic's Powell and Burke each won his opening match in the championship bracket.
 
Powell pinned Agawam's Harrison Mendrala at 3:10 to advance. But Nashoba's Breven Casella stopped Powell at 3:55 in the quarter-finals.
 
Powell came back to pin Cohasset's Lado Tserlov to stay alive in the consys.
 
At 170, Burke earned a 10-8 decision over Plymouth South's Trent Gagnier to start the day. But in the quarter-finals, Braintree's Anders Klaas earned a tech fall (16-0) over Burke in the sixth minute.
 
Burke's first opponent in the consolations was Monument Mountain's Field.
 
Field dropped a 3-0 decision to Westford Academy's Max Chernauskas in their opener.
 
But Field responded with a 3-0 win of his own over Greater Lawrence's Christian Hernandez and a 5:33 pin over Pentucket's Jason Young to set up the meeting with Burke.
 
Monument Mountain's Sean Cormier was pinned by Marlborough's Noah Wilcox in the opening round at 132 but came back to earn a technical fall (17-1) over Quabbin's Alex Aponte. In the consolation round of eight, Masconomet's Liam McAveny pinned Cormier at 3:32 of their bout.
 
Taconic's Mike LaFreniere (113) and Shawn O'Shea (195) each went 0-2 on the day.
